Registered: 02/21/08 Loc: NY I would like to understand the reason you like dogless traps. Do you lump all the dogless together in the same group or would you say there are a few or several styles. When I hear dogless I think of the old monty square 1 1/2. I guess the bigger montys are the same? The jake and the KB style are quite similar to each other. The MB 650 and the sterlings seam like another style. The montanas fall with the montgomeries. I'm sure I left some out and I dont want this to turn into a brand thing. Which style trigger do you like and why? Also if the same trap was made both ways would you still prefer the dogless;IE jake or sterling with dog on. If a 1.75 round jaw vic or duke was was ava dogless would that be on your wish list? And If you could turn any of your traps dogless with a simple modification would you buy in? Top

If it were a simple modification I would definately switch my traps to dog less just because it is one less thing I have to worry about after a catch. As for preference on style don't really have on but have only dealt with Montana's and kbs.

Dogless.................YES PLEASE!!
Really like the Jake and KB engagements. Montgomery/Montana works very well once you get them fine tuned. I'll probably get bashed for this, but personally don't like the Sterling/MB pan engagement. I know a lot of guys like them, but for me, I prefer the others.

Assuming this is a coyote trap discussion.
I have tried them all...literally. Honest! 1.5 coils (accidental coyote catch) 1.75s, 2's, 3's, etc.
I currently only own a handful of dog ON traps that are NOT wallhangers, but rather, user traps.....tricked out Double Longs by Nightstalker, as I wanted to catch a coyote in a longspring before I die.....only reason I have them..
For me, while I never liked bending trap dogs back into useable shape after a coyote catch, my dogless trap love affair really has to do with the traps on the workbench off season.
With the productiondogless traps, Montana or Montgomery, (which I have used plenty of both) the traps require very little year to year maintenance. Generally speaking, once you get the pan/jaw connection right and the pan level, it pretty much stays that way for a long time.
The KB's, Jakes, and Sterlings (and MBs) require even LESS attention year to year.
Grab a brand new #3 Bridger (DOG ON). Put it on your bench and get it ready for use.......
Squeeze the dog eye together first.
The pan will be loose and floppy.......tighten the bolt and nut. Play with the pan for "feel".....still not sure if tension is right.
Set the trap.
Tension may or may not be right......attack nut and bolt again.
Set the trap.
Pan too high or low. Now you have to bend the shank in or out.
Set the trap. Still not right. Tweak it again, in or out.
Set the trap, again....... Ah, got it right. Finally.
Until you wax it!
***************************************
Not a big deal on a handful of traps......but do that on several hundred.
Now, after a year of use. Big pile of steel. Gotta go through it again just to make sure the pan is of the right tension and that it sits at the right height.
Faster now since most will be close to how you fixed them on the bench, but you do have to check it..........annually.
***************************************************
Not a big deal, but do that on several hundred traps!
Now, to be fair, there are things you do have to do on the Jakes and Sterlings, and to a lesser degree.....the KB.
You need to keep those "pan and dog" connections clean.
I use dental picks.
It takes me about 3 seconds per trap to do that. Pan tension will be same as last year, for the most part.
*******************************************
Nope, for me, and talking coyotes here (since they bang the traps up year in and out and really require the owner to perform a good look-over year to year) I will still be 99.999999% dogless.
For whatever it is worth!
