How many rats can i expect to pull out of a "house" on average? I don,t want to over trap if that is possible with rats. I am trapping some pretty big swamps with sign all over and three to four dens/houses in each swamp... that i have found. There is really nice water ways in and out followed by more swap area, a few acres of swamp at each spot. Is it safe to trap it hard or should i cut off at a certain number? Want to leave some for next season.

I've heard a house on average will hold 4 all the way up to 8 rats and i imagine a den would be the same not 100%

3 or 4 huts in each swamp isn't really that many. look around see if you can find more. If there is a hard bank anywhere there may be some living in bank holes. But a good swamp will have 3 or 4 rat huts almost everywhere you look. I'd hit it hard for a few days and keep an eye on the number of females you catch. If I catch more than 1 female in 20 rats, I'd pack up and move on. That's just my own idea. Other people may trap it right out and let more move in the following spring. It's really up to you.

Out of three areas i only cought 9 rats..all male. The cold weather and of course the ice that follows seems to have slowed activity down. It will be warming up again soon so i hope to start catching more soon.

I have noticed that the glands are beginning to swell up.
