I really enjoy his stuff. He sure is a character, it is enjoyable watching his methods and his stories. There is sound trapping advice as well. The Mink, Fisher, western coyote, western bobcat, and Otter dvds all show multiple catches.

I have watched his DVD on flat sets and would recommend it to any K9 trappers. No catches but a ton of great info.

I have bought and watched all of his stuff except a couple of his DVDs and have enjoyed all of them. As Brandon said he is a true character. Great stories.

Johnny believes in the KISS method as do most of us who have been around the block once or twice. His videos are very good and to say he is a "character" is selling him short ;D Johnny should do a video of some of those old stories at his kitchen table - that's where the best stories are shared ! Of course, some of those stories probably shouldn't be public knowledge ;D

I've known Johnny Thorpe for about 40 years. Our trap lines overlap and he is one of the best trappers that I know. I can remember going to his place in Lake Vanare evenings, buying a little lure, telling a lot of stories, and John putting up fur. Met a lot of names from the trapping world through Johnny. I can remember running into John from time to time when John would have a student with him. Seems like he always was chewing on a toothpick, almost like his trademark much like the ash on E.J.Dailey's cigarette. I can remember John putting up coons for old Dave Hicks, the furbuyer in Granville. I can also remember when Ray Wynne put his old Jeep on a railroad car and shipped it cross country to use trapping with John when Johnny was in California.I cherish just last fall sitting around Johnny's kitchen table telling stories and going to dinner with him. If anyone missed it there is quite a nice article about him in the February 24 issue of the New York Outdoor News.

I spent two days with Johnny back in 07. Wouldn't trade it for the world. Yeah Kitchen table talk. The older I get the simpler it gets. He is the real deal. Video or in person there's no B.S Looking forward to seeing him in the spring with some glands. I think his Videos hold there value like no others..

I agree with the posts here....Johnny's DVD's are great because he cuts through the BS that is prevelant today that this trap is better or that set is better and shows you a simple and obvious set with the words..."and that's really all you need!". Had the pleasure at last years FTA convention of having Johnny and Russ Carmen to ourseves for a lengthy talk.....Johnny wasn't feeling all that great but he interjected often.... You want to learn about Johnny the man get and read his book.... "Fifty Years a Trapper & Treasure Hunter" ...some great stories.

That's good news Frenchy. I was at Johnny's in early January. He was doing ok, but Art had to kind of goose him up into my pickup to go to dinner that evening. That first step was a big 'un and a bit difficult for Johnny to manage. Johnny called me just before Christmas and said he'd had a tough season and quit early for health reasons. It's good to hear he's keeping busy and in good spirits as I think he was a bit down some cuz of what happened last fall. I hope to get a day or two to go visit again before starting the spring fling thing.

John if you noticed that Johnny is trying to set his line out as he did when he was 20.He sets and runs 300 trap and his body can't do it any more .I know that I am going to try and do the same thing if I am around in my seventys. It sucks getting older and banged up.
ED I was hopeing to run into you ,Art said when we were leaving that you were probably just getting done work ,but we had diner plans & we would just make it home in time. I am sure that is true about him getting exited but as I just state I think and I hope I am wrong .I think Johnny is going to have to set some limits.I think it took a big toll on him this season.

Well said Papabear What bothered him this season was his legs got very tired.I doubt that I will make it to 78 ,and that I will still be on the line .there is only 1 Johnny Thorpe ,he is tuff as nails, but age will someday get us all unfortunately.

Frenchie you are right about the limits.I don't think he has any plans on setting 300 traps anymore either.I am just happy to hear him talk about doing a little walking in the off season and atleast running a small line.It will be a sad day when he hangs up the traps. EJ

EJ I hope that it never comes to that.I think if he takes it slow and perpares more ,some walking like you said.I think he will be ok.If you remember he had a few issues last year that slowed him down even before the season started. chico We were very lucky he was there he had issues in Dunkirk at the FTAand left early. He missed the NTA also. Then he was unable to make the New England Trappers assoc. in Maine. He was at NYSTA CONVENTION he was only there for the day and did not set up in his spot.We hope things work out better for Johnny this year.
