Just joined today on the site guys,im very interested in Trapping.I live in Zoar Valley and the area I live in hasnt been touched for trapping.I'm looking to get into trapping but there is a small problem... well ok a big problem. There is a mountain Lion that lives in the Valley and last week, the local farmer said that the Mountain Lion has been spotted very close to my house. This animal has been spotted many times now,but (D.E.C) Claims that thye don't exsist and since they are protected you can hunt and kill them.I have a 3 yr old daughter that love to play in out front yard but now she cant any more becasue the Cta is soo close, all the local dogs(evenmine) have been going to the bathroom in doors recently becasue of the cat.My question to you is what should I do?I can't start getting into trapping with a damm mountain lion lurking around any ideas?

Welcome to the site....However, there are no wild mountain lions in NY, you may have a bobcat, but with almost 100% certainty I can assure you that you don't have a mountian lion. There was a confirmed mountain lion killed in CT a few months back that passed though NY, but that was the only confirmed (w/evidence) wild mountain lion in NY in over a century.

Thanks for the quick reply!! Your right, could be a bobcat (a pretty big one then),but there are tons of rumors about it, even talking about it up at S&S taxidermy yesterday I'm not too sure what it is ,my finacee saw paw prints in the snow that were questionable ,how big are the paws on a bobcat?also do bobcats make any noises that might sound familiar?Sorry I don't know much about the animal except that it would make a nice addition to my wall lol

No Mt Lion, most likely a bobcat....can't shoot or trap them either where you live . They have large feet and are likely the cause for more rumours of Mt Lion sighting than anything else. Enjoy the fact that one came through. Never heard of one attacking a human, they don't prey on dogs. Relax.

Do you have any bait? you could make a dirthole without trap and look for tracks in the loose dirt. Just to satisfy your curiosity.

I think most hunters will respect that and stay away but there's always a few bad apples that give all sportsman a bad name. I had to heavily post my property to get a couple guys attention. A few token signs didn't cut it. Dopes came within 60 yds. of my house pushin deer.
