I did it again! And I doubled the size of the last pig I took with my pig-killing Savage 93R17. I think this should answer the question "Can a 17 HMR take down a feral hog?"
Background: I was hunting with my good friend JD on Bayou Cocodrie Wildlife Refuge on October 13, 07. It is squirrel season in Louisiana and we were limited to rimfire ammunition - 22 mag or smaller. John was using a 22 mag and I was shooting my Savage 17 HMR with Hornady 20 grain XTP.
We hunted from dawn-til-dark on Friday the 12th, and we got within 30-40 yards of three different groups in the palmetto, but the winded or heard us before we could get a shot.
Saturday morning we got there before the sun was up and started walking the "breaks". As we came up on a good looking break, John whispered "Pigs!" I eased up to a small hardwood for a good rest. I saw a spotted pig about 100-120 yards out. It was maybe 60-80 lbs. Then another spotted pig, and another, and a black pig, and then I saw one pig dwarfing the others. It was obviously a boar and they were walking our way. I let them get about 80-90 yards out and I whispered to John "I'm taking the big one." this was so he could get ready to shoot at another as soon as I pulled the trigger.
At about 70 yards they turned back towards the palmetto and I knew I had to take my shot before they disappeared. It was too far for a head shot on the boar that was only pausing occasionally as he rooted for nuttall acorns. I put the crosshairs behind the right shoulder and pulled the trigger.
At the shot the boar dropped his right shoulder, stutter-stepped forward and ran into the palmetto with the rest of the pigs following close behind. John was not able to get a shot off before they disappeared.
We heard crashing and John said "I think I heard the death thrash in there. I marked the spot but we better let him have plenty of time to bleed out. If we bump him, we'll never find him. There is not going to be much blood. Do you think you got a good shot?"
I answered "Yeah, he dropped his shoulder like a deer does when you hit the vitals."
We walked to the area and there was not a single drop of blood. We waited an hour and 15 minutes before entering the palmetto. John walked straight to the tree he had heard the noise by and said "Mark, come get your pig!" We estimated his weight at 200 plus. The only blood was where he laid down and bled out the mouth and nose.
The bullet entered between the ribs on the right side.
This is where the bullet entered the lungs.
This is the where the bullet exited the lungs. The bullet went between the ribs on the left side and lodged against the shield beneath the skin. Nearly a complete pass through!

If you think that's cool, you should check out this months FFG. There's an article in there about not only taking hogs, but african big game with air rifles

I have some family down south and they told me that hogs are taken all the time with 22 mags. They aim for the ear though.

I dont think its a weapon of choice but if people think its to light for coyotes and such... I love my 17.. Bout to trade it in and get 1 with the accutrigger.. or get trigger work done to mine

I have one as well. I like it. I bought it after I hit a woodchuck with a 22 and it ran back in the hole. Now I just have to find some chucks to shoot.
