OK you coyote trappers I know this is probably a loaded question and matter of opinion, but what brand are the best coyote traps. I don't fool with them myself, but have a friend that is doing fairly well on coyotes. Only trouble is that the 'yotes are busting up his Duke traps. Any recommendations? Larger sizes to come up through the snow?

Top of the line...KB5.5s next will be MB traps, any size. Popular choices of mid price traps...Bridger #3 OS, #2 OS,regular or MOD traps. Sleepy Creek #3OS and #1 3/4OS. Jakes and Sterling traps are good but way overpriced And I dont think they can beat the KB5.5s

Al, the KB's , the MB550 + 650 and the Montana #3 are what I've been using. I caught and held a goodly number of coyotes in the BMI's this year . I reckon the steel in those Dukes is just too soft for coyotes , they'd be at the bottom of my list of coyotes traps . JMO

Don't pass the info I gave along, I was kidding. Except for the Monty's they're pretty good.

Not going to say they are the trap of choice but I use Duke 1.75 offset traps and have had no problems.I have base plated them ,moved the chain mount location to center and cut the pan down a little so it wont hang up on the springs.I use a smaller trap than what a pure coyote trapper would use becouse the catch here is still two or three fox for every coyote.

Monty #3's are legal to set on land in NY.. They are right at 5.75" inside jawspread

Does anyone use the longsprings anymore. ? Mole I use #2 Blake & Lamb double longsprings still especially for Coon and Fisher. I catch the occasional fox in them too, I try not to use them too much for fox though because I had a coyote destroy one last year. I love catching Fisher in them though. I love the vintage look a a Fisher with one of those on his foot.

They are right at 5.75" inside jawspread My 2 cents on the #3 and NY inside spread rule: Measure them yourself or by somebody you trust. #3 Bridger or Northwoods.. Illegal w/o inside lams.. New FOJ #3 Victor.. Just fine.. I had somebody who ripped me a new one for saying #3 Montanas were legal.. I had to post a picture of the set trap and measuring tape... I like them, even though they are dogless

So just curious traps82. What is the inside jaw spread on a stock Montana #3? I thought they had to be inside lam to be NY legal.

I use a Victor #2 FOJ with great success. Short chain, 5 swivel points and a 15 inch cable stake... That's it.... Cheap!

The Montana #3 was modeled after the Montgomery #3 dogless....one of the best coyote traps ever made.
One step down in size from other #3 traps of the day....mainly Northwoods & now Bridger

bdraus,All I did was weld a strip of steal about the same size as the base.If you move the chain mounting location to the center you can also fill the hole with weld where the chain was located.

I use the KB and would look at traps with a low setting pan and has any modification already done I would also put shock springs on the trap as I use long chains and or cables/drags I* use the KB on cats my misses are very low and rarely a toe catch or a sprung trap. As for cost a missed animal is a lot more expensive than a few dollars more for a trap that performs and you have confidence in ------Its a good time to be a trapper----------Tom

Thank you Tom, Dale,Von, Brandon, and the rest of you guys. Excellant input. I know that anything Kurt builds is of superior quality. Also I am quite impressed with those Montana #3's. I think that you get what you pay for and if you are serious about trapping yotes that one should purchase the best, even if it is only a half dozen. I like Tom's suggestion of the shock springs, but here in the east I don't know that I like long chains and drags, but that's yet another discussion.
