Several months back, there was an article in Fur, Fish and Game magazine about a box style wooden cubby that was fastened to a tree and open on the top. A conibear type trap was placed inside with bait on the bottom supported by a wire screen. I though the article was good and sounded encouraging for coons. If I recall correctly, a photo showed a trail cam picture of a raccoon on top of the box. If I interpret our NYS trapping regulations correctly by the illustrations in the pamphlet for this year, this type of cubby would be illegal in NYS, correct?

That's correct, the opening MUST be on the bottom...

I thought so too.look at the second pic. "body-gripping traps 5 1/2-7 1/2 inches set with the use of bait, lure,or other attractants may only be used as follows:four or more feet off the ground".so its legal to set the boxes with the hole on top as long as they're more than 4ft high.

I was going to do all that. But I just had a thought.. Why not use a DP (TONS of them out there now) and a sweet, fruity type liquid bait on wool or a cotton ball? Just seems would be ALOT easier and no getting Mrs Grandma's cute tabby between songbird killings.

I've been wanting to ask the same question. I'm thinking if the opening is more than 4 feet above ground level about anything is ok.

The wording is what may get you...it states "In a contaner" so even if it's 4 feet above the ground, by the letter of the law it would be illegal....I certainly understand that 4 feet above the ground you're not going to catch a hound and you would probbaly not have any issues with an ECO....but putting that huge box 4 feet up would just be a pain in the arse I would think.....

With all the free roaming cats and dogs.sure its a pain in the butt putting them up,but its the only way I see to use my 220s safely.

You may get a few coon to climb up a tree 4ft but if he makes it up there and is sitting on the edge of the box as the pic in ffg shows the coons are going to reach down into the box for the bait cause arm catches or misses. I think the idea in ffg was about the worst possible set for coon! if you want to use 220s up in a tree a simple running pole would be better and FAR easier to construct. Most coon are not going up in the trees after food when there is so much on the ground. I made the other style box with the 10 x 10 in opening and had great success. If your worried about cats use a fruity bait. We caught a bunch of really big coon in them and no cats.

I hate boxes, to many misinterpretations.

I don't know that I like the set up, but it would be legal in NY so long as it is not bigger than a 220, and it is a minimum of 4 feet off the ground.
