.....has been released. This plan will cover deer hunting from 2011 - 2015. As a bowhunter I see MANY things I don't like, as a trapper in the southern zone I see the 3 day firearm for youth followed by the 4 day muzzleloader season in the middle of October being an issue - essentially a 7 day gun season preceding the opening of canine trapping.
Why can't the DEC just leave well enough alone. All the changes that are made in the effort to "bring more people into the outdoors" (read:generate more money for the state to support downstate interests) are ridiculus. Get your kids off the computer and gameboys and cellphones and all the other electronic diversions they use and get them into the outdoors like most of our fathers did years ago. Too much coddling these days. Pretty soon if you buy a license the DEC will issue you a full gortex hunting suit, insulated boots, handwarmers and a full thermos of hot chocolate.
The Changes:
“Management Plan for Whitetail Deer in NYS 2011-2015". Proposed Tag/Permit Structure - FOR THE ENTIRE STATE * eliminate all antlerless & either sex tags, therefore no tags will be issued with bow or muzzleloading licenses, * antlerless deer can ONLY be taken with deer management permits (DMPs) in selected areas, * the ONLY deer carcass tag that you will receive will be ONE buck tag with your big game hunting license. Once a buck is harvested it’s your only one and you’re done. In areas with no DMPs, or a DMP is not secured via the lottery, hunters can only harvest one antlered (buck) deer. Therefore if a buck is taken during the early bow season, the regular season and muzzleloading licenses that were purchased are useless, * expand the antler restriction (3 antler points on one side) program in the Catskill region. Southern Zone Season Structure: * open the archery-only season on October 1st, * create a 3 day youth firearm season on the Columbus Day holiday weekend followed immediately by, * a 4 day muzzleloading/bow season for antlerless deer only (including bowhunters), * bow-only season continues through the 3rd Friday in November, * open the regular season on the 3rd Saturday in November for 23 days (current season structure), * a 9 day combined bow/muzzleloading season after the regular season (current season structure).
Northern Zone Season Structure: * open the archery-only season on September 27th, * 3 day youth firearms hunt on Columbus Day holiday weekend, * bow-only season thru the next to last Friday in October (gain 4 days with no additional weekend opportunity), * 7 day muzzleloading/bow season (moved back one week), * regular season opens on the last Saturday in October thru the 2nd Sunday in December (moved back one week), * 7 day muzzleloading with bow hunting included in season. Additional proposals: * The DEC can modify the bow and muzzleloading seasons as it sees fit, resulting in unpredictable season structures. * Make additional portions of the bow season, in selected areas, antlerless only (no bucks). * Allow for the use of crossbows in ALL the hunting seasons (legislation required). * Open a youth-only firearms hunt during the 1st weekend of the Suffolk County January firearms season.

What a waste. They charge more and more and allow us to do less and less.

I'm all for more youth hunting opportunities...but a 3 day season gun season during bowhunting season?? Who was on crack when they came up with that idea? I'm not a big bowhunter, in fact I haven't bowhunted in years, but that just seems ludicrous to me to have a general firearm season (even if it's youth only) during bow season. I think I can hear the bowhunter revolt from my house

These are the things I have issue with. I'm with Wayne. I'm all for the youth season, but before bow season, doesn't make sense to me.

Think the deer woods are empty now? WOW!! Goodness.
Makes Sense though. I had to call in and get deer nusiance permits this year....... the DEC was like, "were do we mail them and how many"? They had no interest in coming out to see the deer damage.

I am for the antler restrictions since I see alot of nice bucks in and around city areas. If all the 90-100 lb crotchhorns are shot how will any get to be bigger deer.Last couple of years I have not been able to fill my anterless tag and I live in an excellent hunting area. Was able to get an 11 pointer on last day of rifle a few years back.

It's been proven and documented that antler restrictions don't work in a general population....It's more about the habitat and feed that grows bigger antlers, not as much genetics. If you have a confined herd in a fenced area, it works great......open forest and farmland....not so much ;D

Shooting deer for a bounty,May become a thing in the future if the DEC and Insurance companies cant find a way for Their deer heard to be managed.sure looks like they try more and more each year to find a better way to manage them with little or no success to previous years.
Sounds like a great way to supplament our fur checks.LOL

Many of us hunters, trappers, fisherman have purchased lifetime licenses over the years. One of the selling points of the purchase was the opportunity to harvest an additional either sex deer with the bow/muzzleloader license. If I read it right, New York will become a one buck only state. Im not a biologist and I dont pretend to know the ins and outs of our herd, but either way, I bought the lifetime license to hunt and fill my freezer. These new rules appear to limit my opportunities to do that. wcs

I'm sure they'll reduce the price of our licenses to suppliment us for all the opportunities and food they're taking off our table.

Facts: * In 2002, in compensation for a license fee increase, bowhunters received two additional carcass tags, * In 2005, the DEC implemented regulations that took away up to 10 days and the last weekend of prime bowhunting time in November. This change allowed junior hunters to hunt on the 1st weekend of the regular season, * In 2009, another license fee was enacted, including the addition of a $10 application fee for DMPs, Don't get me wrong, I'm in favor of youth hunts. But not a gun season in the early part of bow season!! And then it's followed by a general muzzleloading season for 4 days.

Actually, this portion kind of makes sense to me. I grew up in PA, and this was pretty much what we had. Your license was a buck tag, good for the 2 week buck season only. Then, you could buy a muzzleloader license which got you no extra deer, just a longer season. Same with a bow license. Then, each county sold doe tags. I was fortunate enough to live where there were unlimited doe tags, but you could only buy one per day. Most deer I've ever taken in one season was 11, 1 buck and 10 does. This part doesn't worry me as much as some of the other stuff. I am glad to see they dropped the bow hunting age to 12. Now if they'd just drop the age for rifle and muzzleloader as well....

If your only aloud one buck per license, than why are there bow stamps. Maybe there should be a gun stamp with your big game license.

Adk - I've hunted PA and am familiar on their hunting regs. One of the things that really stands out to me is that PA non-residents are paying just a tiny bit more the NY residents are paying. I've also seen in PA where the endless deer herds in PA became no more once they started playing around with their regs in the last 8 years.

I've also seen in PA where the endless deer herds in PA became no more once they started playing around with their regs in the last 8 years. It was a good system when I lived down there. Granted, I've been in NY for 13 years now, so I can't speak to the recent changes. I know there was a flu epidemic that ran through the herds and killed lots of deer a few years back. Like I said though, down there, the 1 buck per hunter left more bucks to go around, and the doe tags kept the populations in check without eliminating them all... just my opinion..

ADK - I meant no argument, I was also stating my opinion. Bottom line, what ever DEC decides to do with seasons and bag limits, someone isn't going to like it. I just hope it's not me. ;D ;D

According to the link Wayne posted, they're planning on doing away with the anterless tag you get with your bow/muzzleloader license if they're management studies deem it necessary. You would still get the buck tag.

Getting to the point you can just laugh and say why bother making sense out of their "methods". If I read correctly, they will get rid of antlerless bow/mz. tag, and allow more DMPs to compensate for that, (supposedly easier for them to control herd this way) well, you can use any left over tags in late bow/mz. now, and saw no plan to change that. Say you draw 2 tags, decide you want to save one for a late season bowhunt and use it. Unless I missed something, the same 2 deer are dying with the same 2 weapons, so whats the point??? Only thing it accomplishes is less or no tag for many guys in "low density herd" area, which means they pay the same to get less- that should help license sales. Only thing they are accomplishing is getting more and more people (adults) to quit buying licenses, and I believe these would be the parents of said youth they are trying to get into the sport, and adding to the number of guys who just quit buying license and go shoot what they want anyways-happens evrywhere.
