Finally had a great morning whipping (Hawaiian term for spincasting) with a 1/2 oz. silver and blue castmaster. Caught four trevally, a couple of wrasse and some needle fish before the tide got too low and moved the fish out. Bluefin trevally Couple of Christmas(?) wrasse... Needle fish...

I built two, three piece spin rods to travel with. One has 14 - 20# line and the whipping gear (Hawaiian for spin casting) is a lighter rod (6'6") with 10# line. Travel with these as carry on with a Cabela's travel rod tube. Two reels go in my carry on backpack and lures, hooks, etc. go with the checked luggage. They occasionally pull me aside to check the backpack but have not had a confiscation issue travelling two to three times a year with it. If you were limited to whipping or dunking (bait), I'd choose to bring a lighter rod for whipping with Kastmasters or the slightly larger Yozurri Pins minnow. Bring a pair of pliers to release fish (need to be careful as even the trevally have scuts(?) along the tail that can hurt) and pinch the barbs down. Crank the drag down and horse the fish so they don't dive in a hole or break you off on the reef. If you're sworn to secrecy, I'll let you in on this spot which is about 8 miles from Princeville. All the fish were caught on 1/2 oz. silver and blue Kastmasters retrieved very fast in shallow water with 10# main line with a 20# floro tippet for abrasion. I bought my daughter's boyfriend a three piece Browning travel rod that comes with a travel tube and a 450 or 550 Penn SSG spin reel. A good combination for throwing light lures on 10# line here. Might be an option for you. The only tackle stores are in Lihue where you'll land. If you'd like an info on them pm me. Pictures aren't great but this is what hit today. No idea yet what this one is but has some sharp teeth and likes to dive in holes and cut you off. I think this one is a goatfish... Trying a new area tomorrow. Only two days left, the three weeks flew by.

You're correct, no license needed for saltwater. Once I get home I'll pm you with directions to that reef. The three weeks flew by, leaving Thursday evening, but plan to come back over Christmas and New Years.
