My son shot his first spring bird this season. The youth hunt was a bust because of the weather and Easter weekend. The second Sun of season found us waiting in the dark at the edge of the woods, I owl hooted and one gobbled right off. We had to sneak in some pretty thick stuff to take the high ground, we booted three hens on the way in but they just flew off, no problem. We found the only spot that had a little view in the Honeysuckle, there was a jake and a hen roosted by us and the gobbler was about 100 yards out. I called soft then after awhile he flew down, it was so thick that we couldn't see him. I waited 20 min and called again, he gobbled right in front of us, I told my son to get his gun up, about a min later I had him strutting about 30 yards in front of me, even though we were shoulder to shoulder my son couldn't see him yet. The hen flew down to our left, that was perfect, I told my son to watch to our left and after a couple min. the Tom came into his view at 25 yards, he shot and down it went. What an awesome morning together. 22 pounds, 9.5" beard 1 1/16 spurs.
