i have a pile of rough cut 1x10's and was going to turn some of them into cubbys. i was thinking maybe 3 ft long and open on each end and getting them out well before season. I was going to start baiting them a few weeks before season. My question is this being done by anyone and/or should I just stick to natural materials in the area I'll be trapping. Thanks

The way I trap doesn't allow me to go lugging boxes all over the North Country, so I've never been a big user of pre-made cubbies. I have 1 that I use for fisher, like you I typically put it up a few weeks before Season. I don't normally pre bait it, or any set though. I think that gets you more possums and coons than normal. Just me though, I'm sure there's differing opinions out there. I suppose if you take a few weeks before the season and put out several pre made cubbies it wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience.

Thanks for the tip- time isnt really an issue because i am up there all the time throughout the year scouting for deer and checking my trail cameras. I'll build a few and put them out and see how it goes. My thought was that when trapping season comes, i'll be able to get my traps set quicker. thanks

I run a set-up like that & seems to work pretty good. Can be areal time saver. On a few of your boxes , leave the bottom open as well lets the critter have the natural feel. Also cuts down on lumber.=More Cubbies!

I was going to make them 3 sided so they look more natural. How early do you put yours out? Are yours open on both ends? saw in fur fish and game a wood box that you mount on a tree with the top open guarded by a 220 coni. after looking in dec trapping rules, they look like they may not be legal because they are open on top

Most of mine have screen on one end. I like to have them in place 2-3 weeks before season begins. I have never used them in atree.

I use quite a few cubby's, both natural and wood. I build my cubby's out of pressure treated lumber and leave them in place all year round, I use mesh on one end for coon boxes/ cubby's and wood ends for fisher. with no bottom except for a shelf in the back end to place bait on to keep it from molding from contact with the ground. I prebait before season with a cup of fishmeal. The fishmeal attracts mice and voles and give the cubby a rodent smell. Regards papabear

That sounds like a good idea to prebait with something to attract rodents before setting the trap. Does it ever make sense to leave both ends open on premade boxes and set a trap at each end, or do you think animals prefer to go into something closed? thank you

I had some double boxes but catch very few doubles. I believe coon will readily enter a box that they can see through. Fisher seem to prefer a closed end box but I have caught them in boxes with wire mesh end. Regards papabear

The wood cubbies are fine but you can not take to maney at one time with you, the cubbies that I use are made from 1"X 1" chicken wire it can be painted by poring the paint that is thined over the hole roll and let dry, then you can cut it in to 24" X 24" pc. use a pc. of 11 or 9 Ga. wire, 36" long and run it through the top and bottom end, you can shape it into the ground, or leave one end flat on the ground and lay a rock on it and U shape the other end. this type of cubbie is very light wt., will lay flat when not set up and is very hard to see from a distance. you can carry 25 or 50 at a time or more on your atv, truck or boat. for bait you can use a mix of can fish that is mixed with lard that will last for days. or you can use a sweet bait mix if you do not want the cats and grinners.
