DANUBE — A rabid raccoon was shot by a resident in the town of Danube in Herkimer County, officials said.
Using gloves and a shovel, the resident carefully double-bagged the rabid raccoon, and contacted county Public Health officials and a veterinarian, who decapitated the raccoon.
The brain was examined at New York State Department of Health Wadsworth Laboratory. Fluorescent antibody examination revealed rabies infection of the raccoon, officials said.
There was no other known human or domestic animal contact with this raccoon. Since there had been no known human contact, no humans required treatment for possible rabies exposure.
This is the first positive rabies specimen of 2011 in Herkimer County. In 2010, there were three positive rabid animals identified, and 23 people required post-exposure treatment for actual or possible rabies exposure. Copyright 2011 The Observer-Dispatch, Utica, New York. Some rights reserved

Dear Friend, I was concerned about how far rabies had spread. Last summer a kid was bit by a rabid red fox about a mile from here. Danube is only a few miles down the road from where the red fox incident occured. Regards papabear

I made a comment in 1988, a year after the fur market crashed in '87, That mange and rabies was going to control critter populations because most trappers and coon hunters slowed down or quit. By 1990 rabies went through and decimated our coon population and it has never recovered. Before 1988 I would catch around 200 - 300 coon a season. Now its hard to catch 50. Regards papabear
