I was tracking a buck and as he squeezed between to bushes his antler must have popped off. I found it lying on the ground and its base had fresh blood on it. Isnt it early for them to be shedding?

Very early but does happen if the buck underwent a lot of stresses during the rut. Antlers are the first to go when nutrition is poor to replenish what was lost during the rut .

Just as woj said, stress will do it!

One of the guys I hunt with seen a buck chasing a doe this past Saturday with only one antler, the other side of his head had a bloody mark on it. So I guess it happens all over, who would think stress from the rut could do that. Learn something new every day.

If the deer is all done rutting or he thinks he wont get any he will drop his antlers , The dropping of the antlers depends on his testosterone level .

During the last week of the regular season, my cousin shot a 6 pointer and after tracking, it had no antlers. We re-walked the blood trail and found the antlers 20 yards apart in the snow. I have heard from a few people that deer have dropped their antlers already, or are sporting 1 side... Here he is, cell phone pic...

when you skin it...check for an old wound.
I've shot a few late season, over the years I thought were does, but, ended up shed bucks.
Almost every one had a stress wound somewhere

If we could just find all the shed horns we wouldnt need to shoot every little buck that moves:)
