I have 14 traps set for k9s and coon, nothing yet. Not real happy with the new pail regs, but set them anyway. they are baited with salmon and chicken. Dirt holes look good, but no action except for a couple sprung from deer i guess. Any help would be great.

be patient, thats the best advise at this time. Its been too warm and wet, but now the cold is coming, you will more than likely see a change. Are you using a call lure on your canine sets? If not, it wont hurt to get some. wind direction is very important. Your sets need to be in an area where thhe wind blows from your set, towards the area you would expect your catch to come from. Eye appeal is great as long as your not on public land. Make a big mess, the smell of fresh dirt does a great job calling animals in too. Canine dont travel the same area every night, so dont get depressed if you dont catch anything for a week or so.

Thanks, Im using different lures in different spots in swampy areas so the wind just swirls all day. I agree with weather it was 73 yesterday

It doesn't suck until you find them empty. Im 46 and i only trapped a few days last year so i guess this is like my first season and the anticipation of checking the traps is incredible, like a kid in a candy store. when youre getting close and cant wait to see around the turn or trying to see if you got one across the field. I cant really describe the feeling but thats what i love. Cant wait for my first. then at night i enjoy hunting them.
good luck hopefully we can post some pics.

First of all, Are you sure they are tripped by deer?
I had the same kind of empty trap-syndrome my first year. In hind sight I had two major problems: 1.) trap bedding, and 2.) location. If traps are not solid, a coon (or a k9) will start playing with them and often it ends a a fired trap and no animal. Also, location is key. Keep some traps moving every day and see if you cant hook up that way. A good rule of thumb for me at first was to set 10 to 20 yards from some sort of edge, be it a brush line or a tractor road. Also, look for coon trails and set VERY close to them, if not on them. For K-9's patience is often the key, as I have had sets sit for 10 days and then bam, I start to connect. You have to wait for them to make their rounds.
I am no expert, but I hope that helps
