Sometimes we get more snow than we bargain for as most of you know and I guess you have to learn to adapt to make things work. We had a storm come through that dumped a good 2 ft of snow. The snow then got a good crust on top, almost enough to support my sorry butt but not enough. Each step was labor intensive. The fox were running all over the place on top of the crust. Try as I might, my cable restraints were all but inoperable even though I tried my best to guide them through. No dice. I thought what might attract the fox? The infamous hay set! I am sure others have come up with this but maybe others haven't seen it. Finding the location was easy but how to construct the set... First I put down a layer of hay I then bedded the trap into the hay and partially into the crust. Where I was standing at ended up being the place to put the stake in. Added a fox foot as my lure holder. Built up the hay into sort of a horse shoe shape around the trap for my guiding. Added some guiding with some old sticks. Finished set Talk about sticking out like a sore thumb!!! Just something to throw into your brain when at the right moment, you might be able to try this and see how it works. Denny Emery

Another spin off Dig out a spot in the snow down to the ground, you will now be using the snow as a backing/guiding. Notice how I cut the trail off at the back? Anything coming on the trail is heading for a bridge out and cause for investigation. Layer of hay Build up the horseshoe shape again Finished set. Note the nice level approach?

We ended up getting more snow on top of it and like you I hated trudging through the snow. I was a little better prepared this year. Not great but better than nothing

i use a ice fishing sled to , i added wheels to the back , so i can use it in the spring time to get them beavers out of the woods, the wheels barley hit the ground so works good with snow on ground or bare ground.

Thats a cool set. I've tried the hay set with 2 traps and caught one red to date. I like the horseshoe backing... Hoping I don't have to use the hay set, but if need be, I will definetely give this style a try...
Thanks
