I have been putting hay sets out for fox and they are running around all over the corn field and river they just dont want to come to them. They walk within a few feet from my sets and just dont touch them even with my flat sets and dirt hole sets I have been using rabbit eggs urine and gland lure just cant under stand why they dont like the sets.

I don't know for sure about the red vs grey scent. I haven't been at this long enough. I just have talked to guys that say when urine goes bad, the fox can't help but know it's not real.

You can certainly catch red fox and coyotes on gray fox urine & gland lure but if you're targeting red fox, you'll probably have better luck with red fox urine & gland lure. Red fox urine is kinds a universal attractor for all K-9's.

I tried that on my last sets but had to pull them only after a few days because we got too much snow so I wouldn't be able to check them daily. I had a good number of k9's come pretty close to the sets.

do you have to move set after coyote catch. read were you have to move dirt holes after catch some times due to fact coyote saw other animal caught there. ore left fear smell.

Not sure about a hay set, but I've never had any problems with having multiple catches at remakes of dirt-holes.

I'm sure there are a few cagey K9's out there that avoid catch circles but for me, I'm not out to get everyone of them anyways and as loing as I can check traps and make catches I'm happy ;D I sometimes will add a new set to an area if for some reason after a catch I don't get any other action and I haven't noticed that the new set catches any more than a previously set one. This is just one small timers observation though, where's those K-9 masters when you need them

To the trappers of NY this hay set is great when other sets have started fizzling out .As with any set location is key. My biggest problem was clogged jaws. In the future I'll use #3 traps, bigger pans and more fire power to fire through the hay or I've also used straw and it worked. On remakes I also place a 3rd trap on the edge of the catch circle to nab the slyest k9's. This could even be added on the initial make, as you'll notice how some k9 will circle right on the edge but won't walk in. A buddy trapper of mine uses a drag setup which makes his remakes alot quicker than staking, especially when you have 10 - 14 " of themofrost to pound stakes through.

never moved my sets either. i found the catch circle got better with each catch. have caught many yotes with same set. so not to worry. it may peter out after a year or two then move it, but dont be afraid to set it right back.

I've trapped across four different states and in several different areas of NY. I've never had a problem making multiple catches of foxes in a single set without ever moving the trap. Including greys, although some good trappers in some other parts of the country have told me they can only catch one grey in a set, then have to make a new set close by. However, for myself - in some areas, including here where I live, I've rarely caught more than one coyote in a set. I caught eight coyotes out of one field and each one was in a different set all within sight of each other. I didn't have that many sets there to begin with. When things went dry for a few days, I'd poke in a new set and catch another coyote. Are they circle shy, do they smell something different in the urine of a captured coyote that doesn't exist in one roaming freely ? I've had long talks with Slim Pedersen for hours about these things. In the end, he said "If you figure it all out, you write a book so I'll know all the answers" . One thing we do know, the competition factor amongst canines (read that population densities) is often one of the determining factors in how they react.

I had a few issues with deer in these sets last year where I used urine but not a lot of trouble in areas where I just used bait and gland lure.

Have any of you guys ever used this set with success in wet/muck situations? I have an area that shows fox sign that is so wet that if you try to bed a trap, or dig a dirt hole, it fills with water before you get your trowel out of the ground. The area is about 5 acres of small trees and golden rod in places. I've tried setting the dry ground around it but haven't had much luck. There are plenty of open spaces in the wet stuff, where a creek overflows on occasion. Should I try a hay set or would you advise something different?

Sounds like a great place for a hay set

Do you put bait (like dead mouse) in the center under the large pile of hay, with lure on the sides just above the traps? Thinking about trying one of these this week in a cut corn field near me.
