Mornin' boys (and girls)!
Haven't had a chance to click in here lately... too busy hammering muskrats and posting online video clips to social media elsewhere. But as I finish breakfast & coffee while waiting for daylight, figured now was good a time as any for all us active NYS muskrat trappers still in the game here to check in.
So far I've covered Conesus Inlet WMA, Honeoye Inlet WMA, Hi-Tor (West River) WMA along with various public and private road-access flows without seeing a single muskrat, mink or beaver trap set by anyone else. Never enjoyed total & complete control over so much public water before
Just puddling around now, waiting for the onset of hard ice to reach myriad deep-water houses still untouched out there. 40s F by day and 20s F by night make it sketchy to set still waters by canoe or even shallow wading. By the same token anything with current flow is higher than usual levels.
Not the easiest conditions to work thru, but at least we (finally) have ample muskrat numbers out there to work with.Past two seasons had periods of ideal weather but nil to zero muskrats. It goes without saying that no one can catch anything where nothing exists, so of course animal populations are the determining factor for success. Now all we need are some of those ideal conditions to show up again this year, too.
Please feel free to add your 2018-19 trapline pics of muskrat catches here. Keep pounding those marshrats! Thank you in advance for looking

they are all visible to me... I can post plain links too if need be, hosted by WordPress free software. Logged out and checked, can see them fine. Anyone else have trouble? I'll assume everyone else can view them unless otherwise replied

Same boat as Dave, can't see, can't open. well this is why everyone posts to FaceBook... unlimited storage, instant upload, even right from the field while standing thigh-deep in water. I'm not sure how else to post here and I'm d@mn sure not signing up for one of those third-party photo hosting site that pull the plug at their whim. Already spent 20min struggling here which is a 2min effortless task in FB.

Austin, I copied both of the links and the word press error pops up stating you must be logged in and a member of the blog to see the pictures.

OK... went ahead and created a new WP account, settings are on "public" which means images linked above should be visible to everyone. If that didn't work, I'll pass on further attempts to post images here :/
P.S. I'll again assume everyone can see revised images reposted unless otherwise note

Looking good! Congratulations! oh just having fun outdoors in all types of waterways. Love the variety of habitat conditions & challenges. Keeps me from getting bored.
Also collecting muskrat urine for retail sale to canine trappers next year. I hear there is big demand for that down in PA along creeks, downwind of fryer-grease oil dumpstations. But with only 2 drops (not one or three, two) rat urine per set as advised by experts, a four-ounce bottle would last most land trappers the better pat of their entire career. not sure how many repeat sales I can expect

lol... ah, yes, I do remember that "stuff." As far as keeping you from being bored, a little story. Sorry if I've already told it and forgot. But true story: A long time ago when I was in college, a young lady I was dating had a quiet afternoon party for a few friends. It was a Saturday in late October, one of those days where the weather is gorgeous and anything BUT fall-like. I went inside to use the bathroom and passed by the living room, where her 10-year-old brother was laying on the floor, elbows bent, hands holding up his head, reading a textbook. I said, "What's the matter, David, you bored?" Without the slightest delay he said, "Oh no, Tim, only boring people get bored!" I've never been bored for even an instant ever since.

Not getting enough "likes" on Facebook? I see you're brand new here. Welcome! No doubt you will find that overall, trappers are a united group of men
A number of my friends here are not on FB... yet. Maybe you are, but not everyone. give 'em time, they will be. I'm just checking in with everyone meanwhile. During the off-season all sorts of stuff gets posted here. Nonsense, mostly. But now it's mid-season, crunch time. Roll call to see who all is laying rubber on the proverbial road. Making it happen. Sealing the deal. Getting it done.
I know coni is laying the muskrat hammer and today I laid steel for ditch-rats, gotta love hammering them too. Shallow water, confined runs, easy-peasy when we can find them.
So that's all. Just a thread for active traders. Not everyone is still in the game, which is fine

If I lived in my Mom's basement and didn't have a full time job to support my family I would be hammering a few hundred a week instead of the 20 to 40 I hammer on my three days off. kid I don't even know you... do you live in your mom's basement? How big is the family you support? We all would do things "IF" LOL! Unless you have a bid on Iroquois or Montezuma, assuming you know where either of those places are, you ain't hammering 100s of rats weekly nowhere. But that's cute son, keep dreaming and someday you'll have a house & family of your own.

I own my house from working my full time job. There are plenty of rats out there if you know where to find them. I don't live off my mommy as you do. Blahahaha! You'[re a snotty little brat, aren't ya? Albeit a stone-stupid one. Let me woke you a tad here, son. I worked six - seven days all last year to take this winter off. Carrying block, heavy block all day. Unless you pound the gym like I do, you'll never follow my footsteps when you graduate high school and quit fortnite. On a similar note, plenty of other middle-age guys like me are doing the exact-same thing. Some are out west working coyotes and cats. Some are in Ohio longlining mink. Some are in Michigan rolling up 2,000+ muskrats each. Keep your nose to the grindstone, sonny. You'll be middle-aged and semi-retired someday too.
I myself trade crude oil futures in the early morning hours now, you're too young to understand financials but let me just say that ALL major markets have been ON FIRE lately! I mean straight lit. It's a trader's wet dream environment, a term you can relate to. And lastly, you ain't gonna trap 100s of rats weekly nowhere other than those federal preserves. A lot of veteran trappers out there with much more experience than you know better. So please save the nonsense for your little gaming buddies.

You crack me up. You always seem to bring up Federal Preserves and Montezuma like you are some big numbers guy...in the words of the great Archie bunker..."Whooptie do!". numbers mean nothing to me. You're the one making silly little claims. No run along sonny, this thread is designed for posting actual catch pics, fur shed pics, etc. If you have none of those, bye.

And Zagger is correct, you always have to have the last word. for someone brand new here, you sure seem to think you know a lot. As for the last word, this is my thread. See the headline up there? I control it. Now post muskrat/mink catch pics or go away. Or get banned. That means they will block your alias, then you can't post in this forum no more. Post recent catch pics or gone, you choose.

I don't believe that many on here post pictures. I find it easy on other sites but not here. You must remember Joe , I think he worships our government and makes a small fortune and will eventually long line rats . I have never met Joe but face to face I'm sure he's cool . He no doubt understands the market and has secured a sizable nest egg. I recently trapped 8 rats and a mink and several coon from a small ditch but I have no dated photo to prove.

The guy gets banned more than anyone else in the history of this site and every time they let him back on here he ALWAYS proves why he should never be allowed back on. It's like Lucy and Charlie Brown with the freakin football... Austin, TELL ME you know that joerat2 is actually a-hole joe, right?!?!?!

I don’t post pictures either. Mostly because I’m an ugly sumbitch. But I sure do enjoy looking at everyone else’s. Thanks Austin, it’s good to see stacks of fur. I’ll share a story for you all to laugh at though. I have a small creek that I trap water based furbearers in. Well, due to the semi freeze/ thaw conditions I decided to temporarily pull the line. I did however, keep a coyote set in at the far corner of a field that borders this stream. And since I had to walk back every day to check the set, I also decided to leave in a set that was quite productive for me this fall. The set is just a simple landing where traveling furbearers get out of the water and sit on the bank. I set a #4 Blake and Lamb DLS in about 3 inches of water in front of the landing. I had caught 3 beavers an Otter and a handful of muskrats in that set since November. The creek has frozen and thawed at least 3 times now. So the trap has been frozen in and the ice would partially recede and freeze again. I almost pulled the set a few different times but laziness, and the fact that I had to walk right past in anyway made me just leave it. So a few days ago, it started to get warm, I knew it was going to stay warm so I chopped the ice out of the set and cleared it out, fluffed up the set with a few strategically placed sticks and left it. The next day, on my way by I glanced down and noticed the trap missing. The cable was stretched way out into the creek and firmly tangled around a dead snag underwater. I of course was wearing knee high muck boots and the creek is chest deep. I waded into that cold azz water to untangle and retrieve my trap. It took waaaay too long I was just miserable trying to unweave the cable and trap chain from the under water tree branches. I pulled the trap up and there was my second Otter in that set, ( 4th for the season ). I had to run, not walk 200 yards back to my truck in order to keep my legs working. Nature is harsher when you’re in your mid 40’s. From now on I’ll keep my waders in the truck.

I Always enjoy your posts Austin, I've learned a lot from watching your short videos u make , keep doing what ur doing ,.!!!! I figure it's a good way to cover a lot of those "little things" that an instructor would point out to students on a line. Put out some ditch sets and a little canoe work on that one big pond yesterday, will most likely record a couple segments along the line check today.Stay tuned

I recently trapped 8 rats and a mink and several coon from a small ditch but I have no dated photo to prove. lol we don't need pics for "proof" from you Dave or most anyone else. This is just my "clap back" to those few who constantly dredge my name up and make comment in the off-season. Couple of the usual dad-bods actually said that I'm "not in the game" after suffering thru a couple seasons of drought killed rat populations here. As if trapping (or hunting, fishing) is some sort of performance sport. Wildlife all do three things: feed, shelter, travel. Know where they rest, know where they feed, know where they transition between. Do that and ANY animal becomes simple to pattern. Not always easy to bag, but simple to understand and locate.
btw I see they tagged some big whitetails all around you last season inside NY Antlers page. You do sit in a sweet spot for wildlife, no doubt. Remember that time we met canoes in Woodville on those West River potholes about 15 years ago? That open water is all cattail choked now, can't get canoes thru it without a concentrated paddle fight :/
