I thought I'd share this with everyone. When I dye traps I use buds from Sumac bushes. I usually go out and clip a couple shopping bags full. I found that it doesn't matter if they are alive or dead and dried up. I put them all in a pot and bring it to a boil. It will boil down a bit, just add a little more water. You'll find that the water is a little thicker than normal water, and a deep black almost purple. Place your traps in the water, boil them as you normally would. When you're finished you can filter the waste out by wadding up some aluminum screen and stuffing it into a large funnel. I typically store the leftover dye in 1 gallon plastic jugs. The following year when I'm ready to dye traps again, I reuse the dye from the jugs, and sometimes I have to make a little more with some additional sumac buds. But overall, it can be reused from year to year. I just dyed a bunch of traps I bought with dye that was 4 years old. I hope this tip helps out and saves you some money. On a side note, I'm a woodworker. I specialize in making sawdust, but occasionally, a piece of furniture will emerge from my shop. I've found this dye to be an excellent stain for pine or other light colored soft woods.

Yes Staghorn Sumac, I just clip off the buds. I've found that it turns black much faster and the color seems to "stick" better to the traps than walnut hulls, or Acorn caps
