Hey guys,
I went up to my friends 300 acre property in 5H and spend an entire day scouting for a week-long trapping trip I'm planning in late October. Boy, those woods are a lot different (intimidating) that the suburban wood lots I'm used to downstate! I didn't venture far from the trails.
I didn't find much predator sign as I slowly rode along the ATV trails. Just a few deer prints. The only coyote sign I saw was on the road - about 5 piles of berry-filled scat. Since actual predator sign was far and few between, my plan is to set a trap on intersecting trails, whether it be atv trails, game trails, or old logging roads that cross paths. I also noticed game trails at the waters edge that I will trap.
I plan on bringing some charred wood, rabbit fur, dove carcasses, 1" conduit pieces for Pipe Dream sets, LDC lures, possibly venison scraps, and may set up call stations.
One of my concerns is staking down a predator trap into the "mossy" soil. The ground is soft and has many hair-thin roots from the vegetation that covers the ground. I know a drag would be best, or I could anchor into a root or tree with a fence staple, but, before I go spend money on drags and chain, I was wondering if cross staking cable stakes would work fine? I'd be using the finned super stakes.
Any advice from those who have trapped 5H or a nearby WMU would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
