I realize that, "One does not a pattern make," but in case there's anyone else having the same or other problems I'd like to start this thread to document those problems, and also to use this to possibly provide appropriate feedback to DEC personnel that monitor this site.
Given last years' DMP problems at the start, I should've known better than to purchase my license on the first day. I moved a lot of things around so that I could get to the New Hartford location for Herb Philipson's when they opened at 9AM, in fact I thought I was the first guy there but another man beat me to the license counter by about all of 3 seconds, lol. He was only getting hunting and bow, it took about 12 minutes or so for the slow-poke computer to give him his license, he got both the DMP units he requested.
Then it was my turn. Did I do something to get me on a list of some kind??? I am NOT going to try to fly commercial for a couple of months...
It's my turn, and now there are two guys behind me. The system is SOOOOoooo s-l-o-w. Every single thing that was selected (no more hunting license combos) took, without exaggeration, 6-8 minutes to do. Hunting. 6-8 minutes. Fishing. 6-8 minutes. Bow. Muzzleloading. And the DMPs (I got one, not both). It was a nightmare.
Then it came to TRAPPING. Nope. Can't get it. EVERY eligibility requirement was already checked, IN THE DECALS SYSTEM. I saw it on the screen. But I was declared ineligible for the trapping license. I've been trapping since the 60's! The manager came over (yes after 6-8 minutes of waiting first!) when they called him to help. He called the number on the DECALS help sheet, of course a recording telling him how long his expected wait would be: 22 (TWENTY-TWO) minutes. We tried to cancel the transaction to allow the other guys behind me (the line was growing) to get theirs, but that turned into a mess so I went ahead with everything except the trapping, which of course (I HOPE?) can be purchased later.
I didn't stick around to see how things went for anyone else. I was the second license of the day - of the season - at that merchant location and this is how it went. It's nice to see the cover of the new regulation guidelines, and it's great that some apparent strides have been taken to strengthen the relationship between trappers and the DEC, and while I am relatively sure that this is a simple, single glitch, you'll understand that there's still a wee bit of suspicion lingering within me. But one thing we've learned is to be vigilant. Not paranoids or conspiracy theorists, but certainly keeping open eyes, so I started this to document mine and invite anyone else's issues with purchasing a trapping license. ONE surely is NOT a pattern, but if things to begin to show a pattern, that shouldn't be ignored.

I also tried to purchase a license today threw the decals system. What benefit does the decals system bring to the taxpayer or sportsmen other than allowing big brother to track you via a computer

I just went online to purchase mine and it says Not Eligible for Trapper license. I logged out without making any purchases, will try again in a day or two. I wish they would go back to the bundle license. Super Sportsman.

I bought a Lifetime License of hunting, trapping, fishing, bowhunting and muzzleloader when they came available years ago so I can just pick it up at my mailbox thereby avoiding this type of fiasco. However I empathize with you......

One of the guys behind me in line had a lifetime license, but they sent him a debit-type card with the amount of the license fees on it and he had to come in to "redeem" it. He was about 75 or so. He said he used to get his in the mail, too, but this year that's how they were working it.

The State's Trappers can't buy a Trapping License from The DEC Managed DECALS Computer System ? Maybe this is the Partial Fall Out/Payback for The Draft Fisher Management Plan REVOLT by Trappers. w

I think I'm going to hug my dad again for convincing me to save my money to purchase a lifetime years ago when I was 18! I added lifetime trapping 3 years ago, so worth it. Its mailed to my door every year no issues, no lines, no dealing with people not knowing what they are evening selling you, or how to do it, or how much its going up. All you hear is issue after issue trying to buy it yearly. I feel for you guys!

Not yet. They always come a couple weeks after the start of license sales. And not all at once, some get theirs before others, which causes another panic every year. lol. Its random because my dad and myself have the same names but he usually gets his a week before I do. I just went online a selected my dmps which come within two weeks. I tried yesterday like everyone else but their system crashed on day one as expected.

Well, the reason I ask is because the older guy behind me in line was upset, he said, "I've had a lifetime license forever, I always get it in the mail, but this year I get THIS &%$#%^ thing in the mail" - he held up a dark blue or black debit card - "and they tell me that I have to go to an issuing place to get it! It burns my (butt) that I have to come down here, I haven't had to deal with this bull(snot) in a long time! It really frosts my (butternuts) they did this to me..."
The manager, who was still on hold at that time, told the man that it's a pre-loaded debit card from the state and all he has to do is give his driver's license to get his stuff printed out and the debit card pays for what he's supposed to get. I heard later from two other guys that the state's not mailing lifetime licenses this year, but is handling things the way the old gent got treated.
So, I was wondering if that was true or not and I figured I'd ask you. I hope it's not going to be that way.

I also have a lifetime sportsman, bow, and muzzleloader license. I haven't gotten my lifetime trappers license yet (funds are tight). I still haven't received any of my tags yet, but I was able to go online and purchase my trappers license and get my DMP's free (I'm grandfathered in) yesterday. I did have to try a few times cause the system kept going down. Got to love NY.

I also was able to purchase my trapping license on line. I have my lifetime hunting and was able to get doe tags no problem. Not sure about the tags coming in the mail or not. Usually a few weeks until I get those.

Took the plunge this afternoon and attempted to purchase my Trapping License first and succeeded, along with my Hunting, muzzle-loader, bow, turkey permits, fishing, and One of two DMP choices. Paid my $117.00 Greenbacks and had no Problem with the system what-so-ever. Obviously, this is strictly a problem for TMC only for being part of the Right Wing, Wacko, Loony, Tin Foil Hat, Militia-Type, Anti-Government Extremist, nut-case crowd. Glad I'm still a moderate !!! walleyed

Bob did you buy online or at the store/town hall? I just tried online and my only choices are Resident Fishing, Resident Hunting and Resident Trapping. No choices available for Turkey, Bow/Muzz. Thought maybe I had to click check out and then the other choices would appear Nope no other choices It really should not be this hard to buy the licenses.

try updating your information first. Some guys were saying if your info isn't updated or correct it locks you out of getting certain licenses.

Glad to hear that. This thread was started because there WERE problems, and I wanted to track if anyone else had been declared ineligible. Apparently that was the case not only for me and not only at the location I went to but for at least two others that responded.

I trained to sell licenses for my clients but decided not to after discussions with other friends that sell licenses. The sales agents "cut" certainly isn't worth the aggrevation...
I am still on the DECALS mailing list though and get 2-3 or more troubleshooting or system problem alert emails daily.
