The DEC set a two week fall season with a one bird limit. www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8366.html Any thoughts? We've had three REALLY wet late spring early summer's and a lot off winter kill here not as many bird's around.

Def not as many birds around. That being said, this years crop of poults seem to be very good. I'm afraid once the dec makes a shorter season it will never go back but we shall see.

All I know is the FISHER CAT have absolutely nothing to do with the decline in Eastern Wild Turkey. The DEC Bureau of Wildlife insists there is NO correlation. w

There is some kind of virus in some areas that is decimating the turkey population. Believe it is coming up from Pennsylvania.

I wonder if all the avid turkey hunters know what the fishers are up to?

most of the turkey hunters I know would like all fishers dead, same as coyotes, bobcats, etc.
avian pox or whatever strain it is along with land use change i.e. clearing brushlots and weed fields of natural foods year-round to become corn or soybean deserts are two of the biggest causes for population decline. Along with nest, poult and adult predation from too many scavengers to mention :/

Yes the population is way down, been hard hunting last few years. Way to many predators that like turkey dinner. Good idea to shorten the fall season and reduce the fall bag limit. inmo

Prolonged Wet, Cold Spring Weather Conditions are the Major Contributing Factor to Turkey Spring Nesting Success Rates, (Or Lack Thereof). Likewise, Extreme Winter Conditions Are a Major Contributing Factor for Over-wintering Juvenile Y.O.Y. Bird Mortality, But to say That Fisher Cat are a Complete Non-Factor for Eastern Wild Turkey Predation as was Stated in The DRAFT Fisher Management Plan is to Ignore "The Elephant in The Room". walleyed

It may be a two week season but turkey hunters don't have to shoot a turkey. The DEC should close the season for a couple of years and let them re populate. Wet cold springs and tough winters probably take the biggest tole on the turkey.

Wet cold spring, coons, possums, crows hawks owls highway death starvation sickness, there is a multitude of reasons that the turkey population may be declining .

I have spoke to several turkey hunters lately and they hold the same regards for fisher as they do coyotes if they see them in the woods.....leaves an empty feeling in my gut when they talk of it,be fisher or Yotes ...

I aint got no answer but bout the time the beech trees got hit hard with disease at the same time people started seeing black panthers (fisher what they became to be) is when a huge decline in turkey numbers happened... That was 12ish years ago... Seems the past few years they're rebounding back but pretty slow rebound...
