I would power wash anything loose ,then simmer in logwood, let dry then dip in wax. No lye no works just water and logwood. The easiest way I have ever heard of was just to have the wife do it, I won't mention names.

You need a coat of rust to get the dye to stay. The dye isn't a necessity, but nothing beats a deeply blackened and waxed trap. Just pressure wash them off, put them in the dye for 45-60 minutes, skim off the excess wax, take them out, let them dry, then dip in a pot of wax. Kept the trap in the wax for about a minute, to bring the steal up to temp. The wax stays on much better.
