Have had good luck using shellfish oil in the bottom of a dirt hole and a little beaver castor at the base of the backing by the lip of the hole, My dirt holes are around 11/2" and they are almost straight up and down 6-8"deep crowd your trap as tight as possible to the hole and bed rock solid,if you are in an area were you can use Zaggers hammer beddig system bedding them solid is a breeze ;)pack as much dirt inside jaws as possible without interfering with the pan travel ,I have used peat before but grays seam to be very light footed and tend to dig it out from between the jaws, sometimes just leaving pan exposed or springing trap,...PS grays respond very well to guiding....best of luck

Big bold backing or more of a low smallish type?

A flat set with Night Owl's Plum Loco works great before freeze up here.
The fox should be able to see over the backing or they will be hesitant to approach the set.

If you are targeting strictly fox 11/2 traps are fine,we're I trap I run 2s because of the Yote numbers we have,as far as backing goes I have caught them in sets tight to the base of trees or stumps, have also caught them with very little baking but grays will not hesitate to work a set from the back or side if they can, thats were guiding comes in,I have trapped in blowdowns and have had great results off the edge of game trails if you can locate a stream or trickle of water that's runing threw or along the blowdown the better,if you can locate a spot were a game trail intersects with the water you should be just about spot on,when you are on location make sevral sets a dirt hole and as wharton said flat sets will produce alott of fur. By no means am I a pro just passing on some of what I have experienced over the years, and I hope this might help..best of luck

Love them grays! Brushy hedge rows, old apple groves and stone walls is where I find em. Like Charlie said, guide em, they're not shy. One of my favorite sets is to make a hole in the base of an old rotted stump, stuff some rabbit manure in the bottom of it, cover it with a wad of grass and bed the trap right against the hole off set 2-3 inches. Good luck! PS, find someone with rabbits and you'll have an endless supply of lure.
