Mods, if this needs moved to Fur Handling, sorry I just thought it would get more looks here.
I was wondering about fleshing a bear hide. Yes I'm being presumptuous, but I'm going to Newfoundland in a few weeks to hopefully thin the herd of a few bruins.
We already have a great bear rug from my pap so I didn't want to sink the $$ to have any more rug(s) made via taxidermy. That said, has anyone fleshed a bear hide in preparation for sending it of to the tannery?
Any feedback or pointers would be appreciated. FYI, I put up fur and have all the typical equipment.

Dear Friend, I would assume there wouldn't be much fat on them this time of year. I've fleshed 2 fall harvested NYS black bears. I treated them like a giant coon, cooled the hide to stiffen the fat, a big heavy fleshing knife, an "ulu" knife, quantity of sawdust or borax, and a lot of elbow grease. Regards

I have done a couple. Papa Bear summed it up pretty good. you will get a lot of oil out of it even after the fat is gone.
