next thing will be having to be part of a hunting club to get a hunting license, then a bass masters sponsor to get a fishing license, or maybe State farmers association to buy a tractor, etc etc, just opens up the doors to more control and selective "freedoms" or lack there of....forced membership of ANYTHING is 100% un-American, and no longer becomes "membership" but rides the line of "dictatorship"

Just look to what that great Irishman, O'Bama, has recently proposed: Mandatory voting. Hah... if they can track that you DID vote, they can track HOW you voted. Such a deal. And another NO THANK YOU.

EVERYONE should belong to a trapping association at least someone has our backs. We are all one bill or vote away from the end of it all anyway, RIGHT? If you won't register your snowmobile, buy a trapping license (because a you won't buy membership) then you won't have a problem setting traps when trapping is banned for good I totally disagree with your statement,"everyone should belong to a trapping association etc.." and for good reason. I was a member of the NYSTA years ago, then a NYSTA regional Director , trespassed and set traps on my posted property. I picked up his traps and confronted him, I told him to take his traps and vacate my property, he did. Then returned with two Conservation Officers, the subordinate officer was ready to ticket me for disturbing the traps, but the officer in charge told the other that I had not violated the law tampering with set traps, because it only applies to legally set traps. So in this case, who's back did this NYSTA Regional Director have ? Certainly not mine. I'm soooo tired of people telling me I need to join this or that organization, buy healthcare ins. Where a helmet and seatbelt, register my snowmobile and ATV, even though I don't ride the trails, etc etc etc.. I guess I'm just one of the lemmings that chooses not to go over the cliff, and come hello or high water will go my own way. Unless you have plenty of private property to ride on with permission then I can see not registering a sled or atv.Otherwise where do people think the nice groomed maintained trails come from ? I for one belong the NY and Vt sled clubs.I go to meetings,I help debrush and sign trails, and work fundraisers.A well groomed sled trail does not just happen.I have been stuck at 2 am in the morning with a groomer in the Vt mts in a storm.I have also been on nice groomed trails and reamed the ass out of sledders that need to rooster-tail a trench in a nice trail.EVERYBODY who rides a trail needs to CONTRIBUTE something. If not physically able to do trail work, then monetary, office work, fundraising is always appreciated. NYS has it ALL wrong IMO,and if you do not think so join a Vt club.Yeah the dues are higher in the $100 range but there are $175,000.00 groomers all over the state. And when there is snow, you can ride from the Mass. border to the Canadian border, stay in nice places overnite, and have great food to boot.Vt association takes ALL the money and then doles it out as needed to clubs, police etc.Unlike NYS where the state TAKES it all and doles out when they get around to it.NYS will never catch up to VT when it comes to sledding and Vt also has a atv setup which is similar but I am not famliar with it.I have no problem if you do not want to register you equipment Squash but should be fined as necessary if you use trails that others pay for.One last comment, once you allow a club to put a trail through your property, you are on the ins and you are covered if some dick travels off the marked trail and gets hurt since he is not suppose to be off the marked trail in the 1st place.

Squash, I understand your frustration, however, the NYSTA Director you dealt with DID NOT represent NYSTA in any way, shape, manner or form! He was representing himself, under the guise that he was above the laws and regulations because he was a NYSTA Director! He should have been reported to the NYSTA Executive Board, where he would have been removed from his position! He abused his position, plain and simple! If ANYONE has any such problems, contact the President, Vice President or any other Board Member! Contact ME! This kind of crap makes my blood boil! When we have had officers acting in such a manner, it is a black eye on the whole organization!
I urge you to reconsider joining. I won't beg, but ask that you think about it. WE NEED EVERY MEMBER WE CAN GET! Neither DEC nor our Representatives in Albany won't take us seriously when our numbers are soooo low, when there are over 10.000 licensed trappers in NY! To have about 1500 members is pathetic! I urge all members to come to our next BOD meeting at the fairgrounds on either July 18 or 25. If you are NOT a NYSTA member, come to the meeting!
Luckily, dues to join NYSTA help pay for our Lobbyist in Albany! Dave has been able to head off many of the bills that the Anti's have tried to get introduced! And they keep coming! Without a lobbyist, trapping in NY would be drastically different than what we enjoy today! There are about 8500 licensed trappers that are benefiting from the work of the volunteers that comprise the leadership of this organization! We need dues to pay our bills! When I go to a BOD meeting, I rarely see anybody new! Participation by the membership is needed to keep the ship afloat and moving forward. At the current rate, NYSTA will be just a distant memory within a few years! Then it will be each to our own, unable to stop anything that will be detrimental to our livelihood!
I don't know what to do to encourage anyone to join! The benefits far out weigh the downside of any problems that anyone may experience! There are steps being taken to fix any membership problems that some have been experiencing! Contact me or any other BOD member with any problems! DO NOT call my home phone as it is no longer reliable since we changed providers! PM me here or send me a email and I will get back to you ASAP!
Bob Samuelson Region 8N Director NYSTA

I too am sorry to hear this story. I hope that guy is gone now. Unfortunately there is a rotten apple in some barrels. I've been involved for many years and can honestly say that 99.9% of the NYSTA leadership is top notch. I can remember a top notch Director that resigned because he got a trapping ticket; he felt it was the ethical thing to do. Our officers, Directors, and County reps travel to these meetings long distances and pay out of their own pockets, all volunteers. The word is dedication, to preserving and enhancing trapping in New York. NYSTA is far from perfect, but we are trying to make improvements, such as the website and handling of membership. It is the best thing we have in New York to protect our rights. Please don't let one rotten apple chase you away. Some of the best friendships that I have have come through my NYSTA membership. If you don't like something, join and come make a difference. There are a lot of good people in NYSTA; Bob Samuelson is an example of that; I feel bad for him banging his head against the wall in these matters.
