lets see some chrome footballs K9!!!!!! Ha! Im already in my neoprene and waiting for the to-go coffee to finish. Water is super clear and cold. 3 ft of visibility. Water levels holding at 3-4 feet in deeper runs. Water temperature has been holding between 33 and 37 degrees depending on runoff feeding the creek. Ill be targeting the warmer stretches today, working back eddies and sharp cuts in the slate beds that create those hyrdofoil pockets for the fish to suspend in. We'll see what the creek decides to give me today. Oh to love such a creature with a heart as cold as hers.

The mighty K9 has struck out. The official Naples Rainbow Trout Derby results, 17 fish caught. (111 last year) winning trout was 9lb even male. I personally only saw one fish caught. A 8lb male in full spawn colors oddly enough. Caught in the hole I started the day in, by the gentleman standing next to me. As in trapping, you can't catch what's not there, no matter how perfect the presentation. Water was 33-35 degrees today. Super clear, running slow, 3/16 weight was rolling bottom nicely. lots of old friends out today. I probably caught up talking with folks as much as I fished. All in al, a perfect day of fishing in my home water.

all the local veterans who scouted Naples Creek last night all said they saw nil fish. The main run has not begun yet... the next water rise and drop will usher in the biggest run for this spring.
winning fish was taken from the lower creek north of VFW stretch... around the Meadowview tree farm area.

I was on the stretch between Digger and footbridge for about an hour... holding a coffee cup, socializing only. Left the rod home until the real run begins

Isn't the water temp. about 10* away from where trout actually spawn? With all the snow still on the ground up in the hills here, that may be a week or two away if it doesn't really warm up.

yes, correct. No beds yet at all. Fish are all staged in the lower section or still in the lake.
Last year's opening-day derby had 121 fish entered. Yesterday there were only 17 total entered.

This beauty was caught by Don Beusman this morning at the Digger. It was 12 pounds(about 30 inches) and it took him almost an hour to reel her in. Don spent most of his life in Vine Valley(although he lives in Canandaigua now) He did enter the Naples 54th Annual Naples Creek Rainbow Trout Derby yesterday but did not have the luck he had today. He released her though as he already caught one for the day.(The DEC limit is one Rainbow Trout per day). Thought I would share his story as he shared it with me at the Grainery. He has been fishing for over 1/2 a century and volunteers for the DEC as a Rainbow Trout Diary keeper. www.facebook.com/groups/93946194611/?fref=nf=== She's still in the creek somewhere, K9. I'll be looking for her bigger sister in the morning

water came up a little today, and should rise a bit more thru the night. Fresh fish will be pointing their noses upstream

I was on Ontario bridge with Tom Folts literally watching the water rise over a foot in under an hour. You could see the color slowly turning to chocolate milk around 230-3ish. Once the leaves started washing down I called it. It was like fishing in a leaf pile. Hoping that settles by morning. There will definitely be some more fish staging after this high water.

rained thru the night... spring flows off the hill are running hard. I'm betting the creek is up and coffee colored. I'm also betting a couple guys might be at the Digger this morning, too <lol>

Creek was super high today with lots of debris. Water was muddy, 3/4 oz weight was barely rolling bottom. But persistence and knowing the creek bed, especially in high water paid off today. Taking lunch, will head back out after. 3 fish today so far. 5lb 6lb and then this big girl decided to pick a fight. 13+lbs. Shes swimming farther up stream as we speak.
