Anyone else as excited as me?
Naples creek is flowing good at 3-5 feet deep in the runs. Ice is off of West river and about 200 yds into the lake.
DEC shocked today. Low numbers so it looks to be another good timing spawn. 8 fish, 6 lb was biggest at 26 inches from 245 bridge. Get your waders out and patch the holes from rat trapping, its almost here!!!

I'm ready for the pan fish to start biting in the West. I'm not much for trout fishing but love some springtime blue gill or crappie fishing in the slow water. Oh, and bull heads once the sun goes down.

You should have been with me the first time my wife reeled a mud puppy in. I wish I had a video. LoL She wouldn't go back to the West for a couple years and still won't touch the water!

LoL She wouldn't go back to the West for a couple years and still won't touch the water! ha... that's nothing. Take her for a stroll on the public docks at Bristol Harbor Cliffside on a warm, rainy night in May. You'll count 100s of them crawling around on rocks in the shallows beneath those lights. Some worldclass trophy sized ones, too

Anyone been by the boat launch there on the West? I was wondering if the ice was out yet? ice won't be out for a few weeks... roughly 20 guys on the ice pulling perch as we speak in Woodville. Rt 245 launch has rotten ice, but still covered. West River is open a tad where Naples creek flows in and thru... but most of it is still frozen solid and snowed over. I literally just came down Cty Rd 12 and was the birdseye view of whole flow.

5 days. Water is up in Naples creek from the rain and runoff. Looks fishy. Water was 38 degrees at 1pm today. Still no signs of significant spawn active and probably wont be until next week, maybe later.
Ive restocked my vest with #6 snells and dippsie sinkers from 1/8 oz to 1/2 oz in 1/16 oz intervals. I got cleaned out last year while teaching the girlfriend that the fish are in the water, not the bushes next to the water. Me, same hook for almost 2 weeks. Her, 3 a day on slow days.
Got 5 colors of spawn sac netting and a fly tying bobbin with thread ready to tie streamside egg sacs. New 20 lb tippit on a 5wt sink tip Orvis Helios line spooled to an Orvis Battenkill II large arbor reel mounted on a 5wt Temple Fork Outfitters Lefty Kreh finesse series 7'6" rod.
And my grandfather's BIG net. Got to have his net. Last year I didn't bring the net opening day, blamo, 12 lb female, 20 minute fight, couldn't release her from hypoxia. Always bring the net.
Im ready. Anyone else going opening day?

I like to wait until mid May to hit these smaller streams. Wait for everyone to quit spooking them then go get a few.

2 days left.
Naples creek is running 3-4 ft in the major holes and channels between junction hole and Ontario street foot bridge. 3ft at 245 bridge. Water is a little dirty but there is still about 2 ft of visibility. Water temperature at junction hole is 36.7, at the digger it is 37.6, at Ontario bridge its 33.4, coming out of the Glen it is 32.5 and Eelpot/Tannery creek is 37.8.
The next 2 days cant move fast enough for this trout bum. Hope to see some of you out there. Tight lines fellas.

I'll be there most of the day. Thursday afternoon will be higher water, ushering in the next big run of fresh chrome

If we get the 40-60 degree rains Thursday into Friday, it will be fish on for sure. The chrome faucet will turn on and begin the deluge of 8-12 lbers.

there will be 10+ pound fish in the creek thru Memorial Day. Some of the best trophy fish period will be warm afternoons following morning bird hunts

How about the West? Is it still frozen over? The pan fish must be starting to stage for the spawn. I'll take them over those trout any day of the week!

West is mostly open, upper stretch is iced along both sides. Lake end is still ice locked, panfish won't run until the first hot, sunny days warm the water a bit more. Big crappies coming soon

I keep one big female a year for egg sacs, and to sun render for oil. Over 6 lbs and they taste 'mushy' to me. So maybe 2 a week for eating. I love trout. I may sun render a few this year, its a nice base for creek bottom lures.
