Im an open book. Im no expert, but I know what ive done that works, and maybe more important, what doesn't. I appreciate SilverFox's input as he's been at this longer and is much more experienced.

back in the day sharing info when it came to tanning, taxidermy etc was virtually non-existent (like some secret shaman skill set) alot info available nowadays (another good forum for tanning and taxidermy related info is taxidermynet.net) headed out the door now to run some pre-ice out mink, otter, and beaver sets with Newfox1 ......(once , if, ice goes out, its "Rat Dynasty" in full effect!!!), REDNECK, trap tag is headed to the mailbox on my way out the driveway this A.M.

oh the jealousy!! I wish you the best, I shaved the beard because for some reason we aren't deemed worthy of a spring water season down here. I don't get it.
I agree, tricks of the tanning/taxidermy circles used to have blood oaths, secret hand shakes, and a promise of your first born child. oh how the internet has changed things. you still get the hold outs who swear its impossibly hard or that trying to learn takes a phd and a hazmat suit, but its just not so anymore.

yessir it was absolutely therapeutic to get out and run some sets yesterday!!! (holding out on "harvesting" the beard till the April 15th closer)still hoping we get a good week or more of rats if the ice will cooperate, but a few mink, beaver, and otter sets this week will def feed the trapping pallet, and just plain nice to get back in the woods!!! absolutely, i think folks back in the day didnt want others to realize how easy quality taxidermy can be if one has a taste for attention to detail, i started with a basic taxidermy book from outdoor life book club (back in the 80's) and was just trial and error from there, by the late 90's, the taxidermynet was established and the plethora of information gained was overwhelming (and refreshing to see folks helping each other out) .....my trapping partners wife wants a mink hat if we can pinch enough of them, have you played around with making hats yet

I was just looking at trapper hat patterns yesterday in fact. Also got a pattern for an ear muff headband and I have a set of velvet ear muff cages that should be delivered today or tomorrow, for a project for jdpaint. Been looking at the hand muff rolls, basically just covering a premade roll in fur, but ive wanted one for bow hunting for a few years now. for the days its cold enough for gloves, but I don't want to wear them.
I loved the pictures and posts of your last ice break-up line. Its always nice seeing others success. Hope the weather cooperates for you guys and you pile them up. I on the other hand, have 8 more days until I can get my water therapy in. Until then, I will settle for living vicariously through your posts and my "mouse line" set in the towns equipment barns. Ill take what I can get, Im in trap withdrawl. March is the worst month of the year for me, full of longing to trap and anticipation of trout.
Hoping to get my order from Van Dykes before weeks end, almost out of Lutan and Protal, but the inventory day yesterday delayed the shipping and hopefully it makes it out today. If not, it wont arrive till Monday is my guess. They are usually very good about it. Who do you order chems from Silverfox? Have you tried the McKenzie system they are raving about on the website? I know Van Dykes recently bought McKenzie so that probably has something to do with it, but ive never been a fan of "brush on" tans. I prefer the immersions as I feel they better treat the hides from both sides instead of just the flesh side. Ive only really used Lutan as an immersion but have used The Tannery Inc for paste tanning. It works good, white leather that is flexible, but doesn't give the stretch that Lutan does.

right on, im a big fan of the hand muffs for bowhunting, (i dont like wearing gloves on string hand as well when taking the shot) got a few warm days coming (was neg 2 this morning!!) but really really hoping the ice starts to go on the river soon! managed to get some good sets on excellent beaver and otter sign today so hopefully be pulling some fur this week to keep the itch scratched! seen some nice trout tooling around in the creeks we were running as well, be time to wet some lines before long!
i usually go with McKenzie for most of my taxidermy supplies but occasionally order particular forms from Van Dykes, i use several different tans depending what im doing and have tried most of them, i actually was against the brush on tan idea for years but finally broke down and tried the McKenzie tan and get excellent results, pickling process is still the same (get excellent plumping which makes shaving hide easy) and oiling is the same as well, just the tan itself is brushed on, the tan takes real well, breaks easily, and gives as soft a leather as anything else ive used, i used to be a lutan f guy exclusively and liked the tan with that as well, but started trying others....when doing wet tan for mounts i use the Krowtan (dont recommend for tanning hides for leather or garments) and it works great for that (mounts), started using it bout 14 years ago and mounts i did then still look as good today, all in all its like most anything else, personal preference and what your comfortable with i reckon
