Lots of good points have been made.
Around here, state land during bow season is dead. Come gun season, stand back because Beirut reenactment begins. After opening weekend of gun, forget about hunting state land. The deer have fled to safer lands that are posted like they hold nuclear silos underground.
I get permission from several farmers a year to trap, coon hunt, and deer hunt.
Want to know my secret? ......
I offer to work the farm for access privileges.
Thats it. I tell them ive got a strong back, I wake up early, I'm not afraid to sweat or bleed, and I know my way around tools, machines, and livestock. I grew up working farms.
90% of the farmers looked shocked/impressed and let me on. Never met a farmer who didn't need another set of hands in the spring planting or during summer hay/alfalfa/clover mowing. So i trade a 40hr work week for fall access.
I have long preached about an "earn a buck by filling DMP'S first" type system. But again, it creates deer check stations. I dont mind the deer check concept, I drove to the store where the local ECO's go for coffee just to show them both of my bucks this year(archery/muzzle loader). 1. because they were taken from state lands. And 120 and 160 from state lands is unheard of around here. 2. Because I know them all, consider them friends, and who doesn't like to brag to their buddies about big deer?
As far as nuisance permits, farmers have the inalienable right to protect their living and income. I actually hear from a lot of farmers, more than you think, that they wish they could get the hunting parties of yesteryear back. Because they cant get enough deer permits to make a dent. They also want the deer gone. Period. They dont want you passing on 10 does waiting for a big buck. I guarantee you ask to deer hunt their farm, not trophy hunt it, they will be accepting and grant access.
Just my .02 cents.
