duke #3 with the mods I do and the price I got them for no question. I have tried all the high doller traps and if i liked any of them I would own hundreds, But my shed is stocked with duke #3,s. I can tollerate the MB,s and the bridger#3, . I wouldnt use the jake or KB ,Had them sold them, the sterling Is ok but not much different than the cheaper MB 650. Have not used the Montana,s ,but the montgomery everyone raved about were nothing spectacular without modification. The duke #3 and the Victor #3 are the same trap.... NOw that mine are modified and dye wax you CANT tell them apart. I have never lost an animal from a duke #3 that had trap failure, however I have had busted northwood, monty,s and victor over the years. The two traps I hated were both dogless and thats I why I haven,t tried the montana.

I've been using MB550's and I like them except when we start getting snow. As the snow gets a little deeper the paw catch gets lower. I had a coyote pull out as I was walking up to him this week. Had him by the hind foot in a trail set and I think the 2 or 3" of snow over the trap was the problem. I am considering the Bridger 2. I don't welds so laminating the #3 Dukes would be difficult.

The #3 duke is legal with no mods , I just prefer they be modified, the offset I dont do anthing to the jaws other than smooth them and bubble tip them and If I couldnt weld I would use the #3 duke with NO mods at all with no issues.

once Von tries those #3 Dukes, he'll dump everything else and switch over entirely for coyotes

#3 Montana because the are dog less and need very little tuning out of the box.

The forged offset on the duke 3 makes the jaw face fairly wide. I have some I run stock. But I like to laminate baseplate and change the chain. I do a lot of welding and have access to quite a bit of scrap metal. So modding the traps is cheap for me. If I didn't weld maybe I would like another trap better. I also have a bunch of 550s, but I also do not care for them for use in the winter.

Isn't the jaw spread on the #3 too wide? 6". Montana #3 mod'd are my fav. Maybe I got older, but I HATE messing around with dogs. The question of #3s being NY legal. Ya gotta measure em. A #3 Vic has less of an inside spread than a #2 Bridger. The #2 Bridger and #3 Montana are the same (I believe 5 9/16"). A #3 Bridger is 6 1/8", needs inside lams. Same with a MB-650. A #4 Duke is the same spread as a Bridger #3. The # in the size doesn't mean jack. If shopping for traps at a convention, carry a tape measure until you are sure.

Does anyone use Sleepy Creek #3s ? I have Bridger #3s 4coiled but never target coyotes, only used them on Beavers. I know they need inside lams to be legal. The S Cs are 5 13/16 inside spread.

Duke #3 OS fully modified 4 coil. A duke #3 is not legal unless inside laminated. Stock inside spread is 6 inches. Needs 1/8 in inside lams.

I emailed the Duke Trap mfg. today asking the exact inside dimensions of the #3 CS. Their reply was 5.5" and assured me it met the NYS legal requirements. The email was from Bill Duke.

I Canadian jaw them. Always have. Never measured because what's the point when you know you're laminating. Have welder, will modify.

Because then you will know what your talking about BEFORE insisting others are wrong... Such as a DEC officer who measured a trap on Sunday of Camo's.. Pretty sure Camo and the officer can read a tape measure. And you better know any trap is legal before you set it. Try the "Never measured because what's the point when you know you're laminating." with an officer if it's bigger than 5 3-4" inside spread.. You can Canadian mod a MB-750 and unless you are using some seriously thick inside lams.......
