Even with the blowing snow and frequent white-out conditions yesterday, newcomers to the Flatiron event seemed to find the place easily enough. I guess not every house on the block has a sign that's easily noticed from the road. I think Von told Joel to make sure the sign was visible and cleared of snow. Trappers brought fur from all points of the compass, distances far & wide. There was even a visit more rare than snowy owls from the great north... the legendary walleyed left his compound in the land of eastern shores to grace our presence here in shangria la. Word has it that doctor's orders to avoid chopping ice and freezing to death in a distant beaver run somewhere have expired today. Rumor also has it that a rather large man in a small suv was spotted carrying #330s thru deep snow drifts near Sandy Creek NY. ** Lots of fur passed across the table as usual. Everyone kept John busy grading fur, and john kept everyone busy learning all about fur who cared to ask him any questions. Not only is this an opportunity to sell furs locally, it is an awesome opportunity to learn all about handling fur from some of the most experienced trappers in the northeast. John would rather crawl under a rock and die than toot his own horn, but he is one helluva trapper whose piled up fur in many states thru the years. Add that to years of fur-buying experience, and you have a wealth of knowledge right there to be tapped. The food was excellent, so were the drinks. Craig shared his excellent homemade cider and what was the absolute best pear wine I've ever sampled in my life. There was excellent chili, mac & cheese, 10+ lbs of bbq beaver and everything was dish-scraped clean before the end. Zagman brought vegetables packed "in oil" as m Sicilian ancestors would say, and I made a pig of myself eating more than half the jar of those contents smeared on some bakery fresh bread he brought from Syracuse. I did not eat again until late this morning... felt no need to Overall it was a great time where many of us get together in person, face to face where life is real. My only regret is that I didn't get a chance to visit with everyone for a long time, as the crowd shifts and passes thru so quickly. But the good news is, we'll have our chance to do it again someday soon!

Had a great time visiting with everyone, meeting some new friends. Food was great, I mixed Austin's Beaver in the chili ( not sure who made the chili)but the two mixed together hit the spot, thanks guys. Was nice to see the youngsters there. Thanks Von, John and the others who helped to put this on. See you in March.

There's only one thing missing from these monthly fur sales = trapper gatherings. Anyone care to guess what it is? That's right, you guessed it... no drama. No endless bickering, arguing over stupid inane topics, no personal insults, no childish taunting or trolling. If that's your kinda s(tuff) for entertainment, you might as well skip these personal gatherings because you'll find none of that there. Personally speaking, all the above is why I've retired from the big message boards and spend my time more wisely in here, on facebook or wherever trappers gather in the flesh

Austin, true but we busted on you and Joel all day. Joel & I felt sorry for you, suffering from that inner-ear affliction which affected your balance later in the day... it even caused you to confuse Michelle's boxer pooch with one of those Kemmer curs. You kept shaking a coon hide in front of that poor dog, when all she wanted to do was curl up in your lounge chair back at the house. Charlie brought a cure for the inner-ear thing in that little mason jar, the clear medicine with tiny little bubbles. He said you probably don't need too much before the medicine starts to work.

Austin, true but we busted on you and Joel all day. to you P.S. => my favorite moment of the afternoon was when you were in the back with walleyed and yelled "hey baldy" while I was up front at the fur table with zagman & nyredfox. About half the men in that building turned in response... maybe that's why all of us were wearing hats? <lol>

Made it a family affair with the wife and kids and we all enjoyed our 1st visit to the flatiron fur shed. ( God willing hope there will be many more) My wife and and kids are just getting to trapping and they really enjoyed listening and talking to Mr Rockwood as he graded fur. Kellie said she learned a ton. No way I'll ever get her to the auctions after yesterday. Thanks again to all who brought the great food and liquid refreshments. Wished we could have stayed longer. Thanks again Von and John for having such a great way for trappers to get together.

It was quite the crowd! Von, your gonna need to add on this summer!!!! Good thing is, with all those bald headed midgets in attendance, you will only need to build it 4 foot tall!! My first time selling at the Flatiron, was happy with the results, just sad to see all that hard work go.... Only 8 more months and we do it all over again!! Thanks John & Von

I'd like to thank all those who attended, its what this was started for in the beginning. A place where we could meet and sell our furs. I asked many and discussed moving to a bigger venue next year and the response was often the same "why, we like things right here. I never expected when building the shop we'd be having fur sales there. I've made some great new friends this year and no need to thank me I just sweep up and turn on some heat. The real thanks goes to Michelle for coming up with a tasty dish each time, Austin and some of the others always bring a dish worthy of a chef. I also have to thank one of my best friends 10.Gage, while he hasn't trapped since we were kids he supports us and wouldnt miss a gathering. Not sure how much fur is left out there but we will be meeting again in March maybe just to chew the fat and some more tasty dishes. John isn't just a buyer who stops once a month to buy fur, he's one of the family. He's also a true trapper and works sometimes at his exspense to make sure everyone is happy with their return. Thank you brother

Although this sale was scheduled for Valentine's Day and was ushered in by some of the most inclement weather we have ever had to deal with at a Flatiron Fur Sale, I believe there were more trappers in attendance, many with their families, than any sale held yet. You folks braved the wrath of a miserable winter day with very tough driving conditions to once again make this event a huge success. To each and every one of you I'd like to express my sincere gratitude for giving me a chance to purchase the furs you worked so hard all season to accumulate. It has been a difficult year for us all - the market conditions are just as tough as the weather conditions have been throughout the season, but we are trappers and we've made the best of it. And................we'll continue to do so. Virtually every trapper in attendance felt they received more for their fur than they expected and that was good to hear from you folks. I've been in this game a long, looonnnggg time and always felt that developing long term, trusting relationships with fellow trappers was the key to success. To all of the "old friends" that attended the sale as well as the "new friends" who attended for the first time THANK YOU!!!! I hope you all will continue to be a part of the Flatiron Fur Sale for years to come. Von, this wouldn't work without you my brother. Besides providing the venue for the event, you provide the celebrity entertainment that no one wants to miss I KNOW how much work you have to do to get the fur shed ready - you have as much "stuff" as I do and getting that fur shed cleaned up for one of these sales is a major task in itself. We've re-created the "old days" my friend. That's part of what makes this event so special for all trappers. Especially those young ones who never experienced the fur trade of our past. I will forever remember the fur sales when I was a youngster - they are etched for eternity in my mind. I hope the young trappers attending these sales will remember these as the "good old days" of the fur trade when we are long gone. Hey............maybe someday one of these young trappers that come to these sales will carry on this tradition. Hopefully they will occasionally think back and smile as they reminiscence of the "old days" when they first attended the fur sales at the Flatiron. Michelle, what can I say................... This gal goes out of her way to co host every one of the Flatiron sales and make sure everyone is comfortable and well fed. Von is truly a blessed man to have a lady like Michelle. If it bothered her at all to spend Valentine's day with a bunch of trappers and have a smelly old fur buyer as an overnight house guest, she never let on. Thank you Michelle, we couldn't do it without you! Joel and Becca, thank you for the help at the table packing fur. I appreciate that more than you know. Eight hours of non stop buying at the table would have been much longer without the help bagging things up after each purchase. Travel home safe, brother, and take care of that helper of yours - she's a pretty special girl to be able to put up with all us smelly old trappers and keep right on smiling! The only complaint I have is Becca eating up all that homemade apple pie for breakfast Sunday morning Walleyed, I know you'll see this sooner or later when you check this site out on the Beaver Princess' computer. THANK YOU for taking a load of fur home for me my friend. I would have had to make two trips if you hadn't done that and I sincerely appreciate it. I hope you realize, too, that you have now joined the "secret cult" of the Flatiron Fur Shed. Now that you know the secret handshake and have become part of the brotherhood, you'll be expected to attend more of these events Also, now that you and Austin are so much "closer", maybe you two will be able to get along a little better here on this public forum LOL The next Flatiron Fur Sale will be held on Saturday, March 14th. Hopefully the weather will be much better then !?!?! John

as usual the fur sale/gathering was a great time, and i to would like to say thanks to everyone involved in setting this up and making it run so smoothly. The food was execellent as always, and lots of laughs and good times to be had.
Austin's one post hits the nail head on, a wealth of knowledge there to be passed around, all you gotta do is ask, or just keep your ears open.
I have felt John to be a very honest person from the first time i walked in and sold fur there, very helpful and informitive.
I think the only person there that was unsure what to think was my 2 year old daughter staring at mr zaggers yotey hat......she didnt know quite what to think of that lol
THanks again to everyone involved for another enjoyable gathering at the FlatIron!!

Also, now that you and Austin are so much "closer", maybe you two will be able to get along a little better here on this public forum LOL walleyed & I always have a good time, except for when he goes on those anti-NYB or anti-Facebook rants. Other than that, he's a bit moody & temperamental but I'm used to that with Holly, so there ya go. True fact: walleyed is the only man who has ever spanked me, and judging from the smile on his face at the time it was clear he really enjoyed it. So I guess we get along better than it may appear online in message boards.
