AND I like being able to pin furs a certain way to enhance certain features and to downplay certain bad features.... Wood gives me a better ability to do just that...... Gotta sneak SOME stuff by the buyers! MZ that may work to whatever degree on longhairs... but when you finish coon, muskrats, beaver, etc with hide visible, EVERY possible flaw is visible at a glance to the eyes knowing what they see. Good luck slipping hits and holes in muskrats past a veteran fur buyer... ain't gonna happen other than that, wood or wire is a strictly personal choice. if wood didn't take so much longer to put-up and/or paid better than wire for the effort, I'd use wood too. But it takes longer and pays the same, so I'll stick to wire for muskrats myself

But...what stops a person from over stretching with wire? Can't you keep pulling on the sides until it does not stretch anymore then hook it?

nothing stops a person from overstretching on wire... never said otherwise. It is easier on wood because you can stretch and pin, pin, pin, pin everywhere to hold the stretch. Those two wire hooks don't hold under as much pressure as fifty long pushpins will. guys who overstretch to make each muskrat in the highest possible grade, aka usually those who mark sizes on their boards to stretch to, prefer wood for that purpose. but you can overstretch on wire, too that's all beside the point, wood or wire is a personal choice for rats, there is no monetary difference in the finished product either way. As John repeatedly says in here, and most other buyers too

Austin.... Try this....have a golf ball-sized hole in a coon and leave it open/untouched. It will dry wide open, and any ding-dong can see it....now, put that coon in with 10 perfect ones on a table at Little Falls or Honeoye in one lot....and the guys will point out the huge hole and ding you on the whole lot because of it. Now, pin that hole shut, and let it dry. Trim any hairs sticking out.... It will still be somewhat noticeable but not like the golf ball-sized hole you left in yours. I put it one the table with 10 other perfect ones and it goes right through like the rest of them.....no one points it out. At the end of the day, while I joke about getting one past our fur buyers, I just don't like looking at those holes in rats, beaver, or coon, so I pin them up.....same as on the canines. Wood saves me a lot of sewing time......but in the end, those holes don't make it through the tanning process. I figure every buyer factors in a certain amount of imperfections in their buying to protect themselves since they are buying furs from a million people and have zero control over quality.... That's why, I think, when guys find someone (like me) that does a better-than-average job on put-ups, they will pay a little more, since they finally know what they are getting.... What do you know? You don't even put your mink up, you bum! How popular are wire mink stretchers? ? Not! I joke.....I kid.........................sorta. MZ

t do you know? You don't even put your mink up, you bum! How popular are wire mink stretchers? ? Not! MZ yes, coon can be improved in appearance, and I suppose it looks nicer when holes in muskrats are pinned together. I used to do that myself, when using wood. But again, no serious buyer will pay one more dime for muskrats on wood with the holes pinned shut any more than they ignore the holes that don't quite break membrane of the skin yet you can see them thru the leather side. So it still goes back to personal choice of wood or wire for muskrats, there is no dollar difference. and I didn't put my mink up this year because I was too busy STACKING UP MUSKRATS!!! <grin>

Bum, I say....BUM!
A mink takes 13 seconds more time to put up than a 'rat, which you DO put up......
Do you need to borrow some pins and wood? Happy to send you what you need!
I do agree.....wood vs. wire is a personal choice.....fur ranches use wood, and that's good enough for me.

Mink do look Nice when done on wood, that's what I use on them. Never done rats on wood. I do my fox on wood only now and really like how they look when finished.

MZ Well I want to start trapping muskrat ranches... gotta be an easier way than chopping all that ice! But I do admit to being rather lazy today. After hiking into a little backwater slough with some fresh houses, I looked around and only set my traps where the ice was real thin, and in some cases wide open. The ice walking was easy but I didn't feel like chopping thru 4" everywhere else, so I just clustered my traps in those thin-ice grooves. Mostly between muskrat houses and feeder huts. Hope I catch something tomorrow

Anyone else notice Zagger signed his post "MX"? Weird? I wonder if he finally changed his last name to something cool.

no... ignored it. I've thrashed this same exact discussion year after year after year in tman since my arrival there April 2010, same cast of characters, same stubborn b.s. opinions, no change. Who the hell wants to beat this dead horse any further? Everything pertinent to say (and more) has been said ten times over. Far as message boards in general go, if/when I see a fresh topic of interest, I'll converse. Otherwise the "NAFA is god" and "Duke traps suck" and "putting up fur" and "floats sets are best for muskrats everywhere" threads hold no further interest to me. I spend my free time on the FaceBook trapping pages... where guys are actually still out trapping and showing lots of current trapline pics. The conversations are generally devoid of childish ball-busting and anti-social trolling, too as for wire vs wood boards? Use whatever feels good to ya! P.S. - I'll put up all my mink next year like I used to thru the decades past. There simply wasn't time this year, I was too squeezed from every angle. Not the least of which was putting up other people's fox, working with new trappers on their fur many hours at a time, etc. I ain't half bad at boarding mink myself... and yes I do have mink boards of my own, both sexes to boot <grin>

But I was referring more to Von's singing and dancing talents... Cccccrazy things happen at camp Flatiron.... Although, MZs more of a "head banger" We've seen the aftermath of that! Think Miley Cyrus named a recent tour after him...
