how often do any of you that trap beaver see a kit living on its own? i mainly trap the river, one spot i hit this year, ive been trying to set it for the last couple years and its always frozen over, this year i got lucky and it was open, so make a castor set with drowning rig and then put a coni on a slide they were using to get to a tree. only beaver i took over a 4 day period was tiny kit. nothing else appeared to even be worked???
today my dad an i were checking the line and looking at some beaver sign, a small feed pile, i was lookin for a bank den near a down tree, walk around the tree and low and behold a little tiny kit beaver snagged in a 1 1/2 long spring by three back toes.... i let him out of trap unharmed, but i have a drowning rig set up near by, im wondering if hes out on his own alread??? if thats the case i think i might as well pull that set up, but i would think mom and pop would be around, it seemed awful young to be on his own already???
any insight???

The kits come easy, ma, pa should be around. I have caught 2 year olds alone but not kits. Maybe someone with more beaver experience will chime in.

In my opinion there are more kits nearby. Probably a late litter. If it were me I would pull my traps in that location to avoid catching more.

I don't trap a lot of beaver but if you move further away from the den you will get the bigger ones the little ones don't travel as far !

countryboy that might be a good idea. im not 110% positive where the den is exactly, im guessing its somewhere right there close by sense that little turd this morning went that direction. i dont much care to take the kits, hopefully ill have one of the bigger ones in the am, and not the one i released, i think i will move up stream some and try a castor set, maybe that will deter the younger ones and nab a big one.
