I set my first dp trap and it was knocked over, triggered and all the bait gone, but no coon. What could have happened?

Any deer tracks? Any other sign? Could be a deer tripped over it and mice ate the bait. I wouldn't be concerned, reset and good luck.

I find that canines will sometimes do that. One of the reasons I'm not overly fond of DP's. Make a couple of dirt holes nearby and see what happens.

If the trap fired you might of had a pull out. I put a good swivel in the middle of the chain on all my DP's to try to prevent that. Also if the soil is too loose they can easily pull the trap out of the ground without firing the trap rendering it useless.

I disagree that if the trap is out of the groung its useless I had a spot where I knew the coon were traveling a concrete drain and no way to stand or anchor trap. The drain came from private property right out to a public stream. I tapcon screwed the swivel to the drain wall and let it hang and let one lay on the ground I took 6 coon there !

I would agree that if the chain has no slack because of being hung that it could fire but if it is staked to the ground in a normal manner with slack in the chain, it would be more unlikely to happen
