since they are only worth about $4 bucks, this would be the year to let others practice on them! MZ And your rodents are worth that much more? Ha.

Nope, muskrats...you will see..........don't guy buying a new house yet on your rat catch!
But hey, we all trapped rats for decades at $3 bucks each or less...so $4 is still pretty good!

was on the phone last night with Trent Masterson about the NTA demo schedule... but more importantly we talked muskrats for about an hour. Trent and a partner did 1,000+ out of state this fall, I think he already broke 1,000 more at home in Michigan or is working on that now. Then going back out of state in the spring for another pile at the end.
Anyways, he said there is an auction sale in Michigan this weekend I believe that is mostly a muskrat sale where reps for Korean manufacturers attend. That sale should set the stage for early rat prices everywhere. Be interesting to see what those results are. It'll be posted in the Michigan Trappers page on facebook.

I'll do that when time permits. Trent said they averaged 150ish rats per day on a 39-mile road loop out of state. All they ran were colony traps in culverts and bridges... 100% puddle jumping mode, if you will. I'd opine that's definitely a way that works for big numbers. They hired out the skinning and put-up for obvious reasons, no time for handling when longline production uses all the daylight hours. At home in MI he freezes his catch whole on the carcass until it slows down, then he puts up later. Just like me. Must be muskrat trapper minds think alike We could have talked on the phone all night, but I'm towards the tail end of skinning out my freezer stock of muskrats and had to go. I look forward to visiting with him and Steve Derbyshire out of Canada at the NTA next summer. Serious veteran rat trappers who produce 1,000s per season in modern times, and therefore can speak the language. Oughta be a good time!

two guys and 150 a day they should be able to skin them. Little harder when outstate if one doesn't have the facility.

considering it was late October, I'd opine lack of cold storage was the crux. That said, if/when I go out of state for rats in a mecca type location, I am not spending two - three hours per night handling catches unless I absolutely have to. That takes away from max production results.

What else would you have to do from 8til midnight u less you plan on running in the dark?
I've done it before 14 foot enclosed trailer and a couple freezers, skin inside and freeze your stuff

I've been practicing on my muskrat skinning. After skinning 32 this year I'm down to 10 min 45 seconds. I can't wait for the rat skinning contest at the Flat Iron. Who's in?? Austin I hear you can fly through those rats like lightning.
