So I have a friend, a young kid, lets call him Joe, who is brand new to trapping, a friend of a friend, lets call him Frank, offered to take him trapping to show him the ropes. Which was great and Joe was very excited to go along with him. They go out on Frank's trap line first and he is showing Joe how he does everything and going through the motions. Joe asks Frank if they can put some traps on some land that he has permission for and frank says sure but you will have to check them because Frank won't have time with all the other traps he has, Joe agrees he will check them. They go to Joe's spots and set some traps, they pick the spots together. Frank sets all the traps himself because he is teaching Joe except for one he has Joe set himself. Nothing was discussed on who was to keep what was trapped in these traps. The first animal that was caught was a red fox and it was caught in the one trap that Joe actually set himself. No brainier here Joe keeps that fox. Next animal caught is a beautiful all Black Coyote. Joe was checking the traps and found it caught and killed it. No here is were it gets tricky. Joe is obviously very excited and calls Frank telling him how awesome it is and he is going to get it mounted. Then he calms down and calls Frank and offers him the Coyote because they did it together and Frank tells him nope, your land, you checked the traps, you found it, you killed it, it's all yours. Joe brings the coyote over, Frank helps him skin it. Frank happens to be a taxidermist and they go over what kind of mount Joe wants and Joe of course leave it with him. Joe also asked Frank at least one other time if he is sure he doesn't want it and he says no. A day or two later Frank calls Joe and says "hey we got to talk" and tells him that he thinks he should keep it cause he actually set the trap and it got caught in that trap. Joe not wanted to be a dick and grateful that he was willing to teach him and take him under his wing said sure no problem, but he is actually quite upset about it. I have known Joe for a long time and have seen him kill big bucks and not be as happy as he was when he got this Coyote and now he is disillusioned about trapping and went and pulled all the traps and doesn't seem to want anything to do with it now. I personally think this guy Frank is in the wrong here but I wanted to get some other trappers opinion on it. Like is there a trappers code, "if you set the trap it's yours" type of thing, cause using the same logic if Joe set one of Franks traps on Franks trap line Joe would keep it even though he wasn't the one checking them. Let me know what you think.

I agree frank's wrong here, he shouldn't have told him he could have it and and help him pick a mount and then...... Change his mind...that is wrong he should have said no its mine right off..just my two cents.

I think frank is way in the wrong ! I mean if wasn't checking traps and doing the grind other than teaching it should be Joe's

Shake the kids hand and tell him great job, should be all the reward a man needs. No better way to discouraged a young trapper than that.

Is Frank going to keep the mount himself or does he have a buyer for it? My guess is that the money got to Frank. Most of us know, it's not about the money! Maybe Frank will man up and make a gift of it once it is done. If not, Joe should find a better mentor!

Kirkwooder, I know he is not going to sell it, I think Joe said he wants to mount it and take it to shows with him.

If Frank wanted to use it at a few shows, I'm sure that Joe would be more than willing to lend it to him.

That story rubs me the wrong way. Man. What a jerk. Its the kid's coyote! Frank said it himself. It shows a lot about Frank's integrity. Not the kind of guy I'd want to learn anything from.

It's like how people get funny about big bucks, I always say don't take someone hunting unless you are OK with them shooting the big buck on the property. I think Frank just realized how big of a trophy it was and got jealous. If it was a gray coyote there wouldn't be an issue, Frank wouldn't care. Another trapper in the Rochester area said he's tapped over 500 coyotes and only got one black one.

Rather not use names cause as you can tell it is a touchy subject but the 500 coyotes statement I believe was over his lifetime of trapping not in one year.

the guy that got the 500 is cool as nuts, different guy then Frank. He just is the one that said how rare a all black coyote is and I think that is what made Frank want to take it back.

Forget trapping, if you have seen this young kid kill big buck(s), sounds like that should be his game.

Well, get a grapevine going 'round about on here and wherever this guy goes to set up shop or a show, those of us local to it attend and ask, in the presence of the admiring crowd that gathers: "Hey, Frank - isn't that the black coyote that you stole from Joe?" See how that goes over...

While I don't wish to start a big thing about it, I can say there can't be to many trappers in the Rochester area that are also taxidermists, if you know what I mean. What I can say is this person has lost my business, my referrals, and my respect.
