Has anyone ever tried it? I saw a post on trapperman about it and then watched a few utube videos where guy's were doing it during the day time. Well, I called at five different "good" locations to no avail. I've pulled most of my line do to back trouble and problems with bow hunters and was really hoping this would work.
I'm using a Primos Top Dawg caller and really haven't had any luck calling anything with it. I was wondering if I was doing something wrong.

Kirk back in the 80's I had a Johnny Stewart tape caller, I called in and killed more coon and greys then I would like to say on a open forum. The only tapes I owned and used were Dennis Kirks coon puppies and woodpecker distress.

Did you get coon coming to the woodpecker or just the coon pups? Did you do anything special in the way of set up. Finally, did you ever cal during the day?

The aBove info is good. JS coonfight is good as well as coon/greyfox fight.Bird has worked when real cold a little.I only call at night and into corn, swamps, coon looking areas. My coyote percentage went way up after using coon puppies and gfp. They will sound off and give up there location.Be ready to shoot as soon as the caller is on.practice at night. If youve been 5 times , try 5 sets 6 to 7 days a week .You will not soon forget your first set of glowing eyes.

Dear Friend, I too did a bunch of calling back in the Late 70's thru the 80's. I had one of the first copies of Dennis Kirks "Coon Puppies" tapes before it was available to the public. I went to Dennis' house around the time he was perfecting the sound. At the time he had a coon in a large cage and when he turned on the tape that coon came unglued. As Mr Saquelie stated the "Coon Puppies" and "Woodpecker" tapes are extremely effective, I also had real good luck with his "Flicker Distress" tape.
Some advise when calling coon with the "Coon Puppies" tape...DO NOT SET THE SPEAKER ANYWHERE NEAR YOU as coon will be UNHINGED and EXTREMELY AGRESSIVE/AGITATED when they respond. Ive also had a number of grey fox respond very very agressively. For calling I had an old .22 mag / 20 gauge over and under and more than a couple times I shot coon and grey fox in self defense with the 20 gauge, Lol. Have fun, be safe and good luck. Regards

Thanks Papabear, I am going to give it another try today. I hope to have some of the same experiences as you describe, however have not had any success as of yet.

Dear Mr. Kirkwooder, I primarily called at night and grey fox and raccoons were my best responders. Red fox came in if the set up was right with the wind but by no means responded anywhere near as readily and recklessly as greys and coons. Coyotes for the most part would hang up out of shotgun range and sometimes yap at me. I found that coyotes responded best and presented the best shot oppotunities at dusk or dawn.
Calling set ups were mainly along old dirt roads (speaker on the edge of the road and kneeling in the ditch) tractor lanes between crops, road crossings where critters traveled from one side of the road to the other, swamps, along rivers and lakes (Nautral BARRIERS). Regards

Thanks again Papabear, I tried calling 3 more spots this morning, to no avail. I'd really like to make it work somehow during the daytime. I may give it another shot tomorrow night just to see if I can at least get some action.

OK, so today I headed to Hi-Tor with the rifle looking for deer and fresh coon sign. I found a lot of the latter and none of the former, so I fired up the caller and called about 20 yards from several dening trees with fresh sign every where. I could not get a single coon to even poke it's head out and look my way. I must be doing something wrong.

Hi-Tor area has a distinct lack of coon traffic this year... the bottomland trails are stone cold, and I mean traditional trails that have been in place for decades
you might better coon hunt the west river marsh... it's drained down to inches of water and mud again. by noon tomorrow, every available rat run will be covered with traps. The lake association and their winter pool levels have destroyed the muskrat trapping there

Austin, I found lots of sign on the Italy hill side, several hundred yards deep in the woods. The oak ridges up there seem to have a decent population. Not great but enough that the hound will be loosed there a couple nights soon! I just can't seem to get them to come to the caller during the daylight hours like I have seen on some of the U tube videos. I really would like to figure that out and get it working for me. It looks like a ton of fun!

I have shot a lot of coon using an electronic caller. That being said I'm not sure how many of these I have called in. We walk the edges of corn fields (standing is best, but cut also works) with the caller going, woodpecker, and scan the trees. I think the coon are hearing us and treeing vs coming to the call. This does not work well for the fox. If the area looks foxy we will call for them in the open before entering the corn. Have never had a coon come to us on the ground. Force the coon up a tree and he will look at the caller. Hope this helps, Happy Thanksgiving
