I caught a coon today with a metal ear tag saying usda. What is this for or mean? In 20 years of trapping I've never seen this

Did it happen to have a grade? How about a picture? I've never heard of a tagged coon, but I know some of the state college's do studies on different animals. It might have something to do with one of those but that is only a guess. It would be worth contacting the USDA to see what they have to say. They obviously wanted to ID that coon for some reason.

Biological data has been collected from raccoons and skunks with ear tags in parts of Clinton, Essex, and St. Lawrence counties by the USDA Wildlife Services as part of an ongoing study by the National Rabies Management Program. You have captured one of those raccoons that has previously been processed.

Around here it would mean that they escaped from a secret Ebola weaponization facility - using wildlife to infect trappers. Either that, or it was the one in REDNECK'S avatar... And for those (hopefully) very few that think I'm in the least bit serious, here's the disclaimer: I'M NOT.
