When do you start, and when are they prime? I've seen a few while coon hunting over the last few seasons and would like to try to catch a few, but I can't imagine they will be white next week when the season opens here.

Dear Friend, I trap all kinds of weasels, lol, fisher, marten, mink, otter and catch an occassional ermine. As a rule weasels get whiter as the daylight hours get shorter. Regards

White weasles or ermine start showing up here around thanksgiving. I saw a snowshoe rabbit yesterday and his feet and belly were white. If that's any indicator.

Thanks Guys, I figured they would not be ready yet, but with season opening this weekend had to ask. Do any of you use coil springs or body grips, or do you all use rat traps?

I am trying a little Weasel trapping this year myself. I have been researching the topic quite a bit, a 1-1/2 long spring is highly recommended. They grab the weasel high across the shoulders and chest, quick humane kills without fur damage. Also occasionally your weasel set can be visited by more valuable animal(mink, fisher, bobcat...) and a 1-1/2 long spring can hold them if anchored properly, and... that is if they are in season? I opted with rat traps, but will upgrade to the long springs if it seems more practicable.

You can also use #1 long Springs, make sure they are hair triggers, put bird seed in boxes before season to get mice using boxes then when season is right after thanksgiving set traps if you catch a mouse use for bait under trigger, good luck

I have several dozen old victor 1 1/2 coil springs that I picked up used, that have been modified to fire if a mouse passes gas any where near them. I was thinking about using them. Trap in the truck philosophy.

I don't set hair triggers for weasels in my boxes. I actually set a full pan throw. Otherwise, the mice will drive you nuts, jumping from the entrance hole down on to your pan. I get full body catches this way on both weasel sizes, and have far less mice...... I think the 1.5 long to be the perfect trap for this set up..... They are fun, and addicting......and just cool little critters. Like mink, they ride on the front seat after capture.... MZ

Thanks Zagman, I'll have to do some trap tuning and box building in the next few days. I never gave mice a thought. I can't imagine what this guy was thinking when he modified these traps, I have a hard time even getting them to stay set.

Look at the ice in that pic....I catch most of my weasels in grassy ditches, drainages, cattail swamps, etc.
