Any one ever try to use a cement mixer to tumble fur? Way to ruff and sharp in side. Not recommended. Better off to use a old dryer with the heating element disconnected, Tape or seal up the air vents inside the drum. Or you can make one from scratch, i did Dave

The trouble is, I have the mixer, and don't have a dryer. I thought I might take the paddles out of the mixer just for fur season. I guess I'll have to look into building one from a barrel. I think that I have a couple old electric motors kicking around. I'll just need to pick up the barrel.

I made my drum out of plywood and wrapped it with Bathroom wall fiberglass panels. Dave

would a 1/3 hp motor be enough?
Onehand, do you have photos?

When I did taxidermy I used an old gas dryer, tape off the vent, dont use the heat of coarse... works good on a small scale

I bought a new motor and V F D drive system for mine, I have yet to install it. That way I can shuts the speed as needed by a push button. Rats need to be slowed down because of the weight more then coyotes that need to turn faster to make it to the top of the drum for the full drop effect. Dave

One handed setters:
What type of Variable Frequency Drive did you install? I do quite a bit of work with them.

I will have to look, I got it a while ago and have not had time to hook it up. I used a 20 to 1 speed reducer off a old tread mill with a 1/3 hp motor and it works fine. But it is only one speed till I get the vfd hooked up. Dave

Just to let everyone know, I've been using my mixer for a tumbler and it works great! I changed nothing, only added pelts and hardwood sawdust.

Is yours one of the old steel cement mixers or the plastic drum. The plastic ones are not bad at all. Dave

It's an old (1960's I think) craftsman steel drum mixer. I can put 3-4 good sized coon pelts in with a couple buckets of fine sawdust. I need to bungee a trash bag over the opening or all the sawdust drifts out, but other than that it works great.

I could tumble about 4 years worth of fur in that thing! All at once!
