Hello everybody, as some of you know I will be putting out about a dozen canine sets this year. I am going to be using peat and dry dirt to bed and cover my sets. My question for all all of you is when using peat how much do you mix with your dry dirt? Do you make it a 50-50 mix or go heavy on one or the other? Any help is appreciated

I don't mix them. I bed the trap and cover with the peat moss. Then I sometimes blend with dry dirt, but only just enough to cover the peat and make it all look the same.

I mix half and half. Last year I got some dry dirt along an old railroad bed. You know, that black kind of grainey soil. Sifted the rocks out into a bucket and mixed half and half with peat. When we got to the end of the season, we wished we had mixed more earlier. Worked great. Lots of ants in that soil.

I like a 2 part dirt and a 1 part peat mix.. Used straight peat last year, didn't like it as much. Personal preference basically.. Going back to the dirt/peat mix this year....

Does anyone use the dirt from ant hills? An old trapper I knew as a kid would go out in the summer and dig up ant hills and store this dirt to make his canine sets.

Use to use it all the time. Ants will treat the dirt for you.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I guess I will have to make a few sets with different mixtures and find what works best for me.

Won't the heavier dirt separate from the peat and not really mix well? I would think the dirt would end up mostly in the bottom of whatever your transporting it in.
