Weather man says Saturday should be good. Lets hope so. thinking you might have jinxed us National Weather service calling for a 50/50 chance of rain saturday. but then again a 50% chance of sun too. but whatever, its all good what counts is being there and learning and meeting people and good times bringing a co-worker who is a novice to trapping. We enjoyed the state convention so looking forward to this

My Dad's in hospice, and he wants to go for a ride to his house, my farm, and to the family camp that he and my uncle first bought back in 1953. He can't do all those at once or even on consecutive days, and he knows that it may well be the last ride he ever takes. He's hoping to do at least one this weekend, so for the foreseeable future my schedule is going to be determined by his. So, to answer your question, Brian, I just plain don't know yet. Pretty much it's all going to be maybe yes, maybe no. Sorry I can't be more clear.

Thanks, guys. He called my baby sister - there's 10 of us kids, I'm #7 - on Thursday to say that he thought he was ready to take a "practice run." So, they got him into another sister's car, took a nurse along, and went up to his house and my farm (across from his house). I just had a new green metal roof put on the barn (most of it I did myself, but it had to be completed by some Amish friends because I fell - AGAIN - from the roof and got a bit more injured), and although he'd seen photos of it, all he'd been talking about was seeing it for himself someday. Well, he had a blast. Then he made plans to go to "camp" today; we've always called it "camp," although my Dad and uncle gave it a name (Rossnaree, from their ancestral place in Ireland) many decades ago. It's about 400 acres on a lake and a large creek that feeds into the lake, up on the plateau about 3/4 mile in from the highway is the camp my uncle built (he died in 1993), another 3/4 mile down at the point where the creek meets the lake is the camp my father built. Both are very nice buildings, but seasonal, no basements. Both were built back in the fifties. They bought it together in October, 1953, before I was born; all my best memories are from up there. It's all now in my baby sister's name even though it's all still "family." Sadly, this will be our (me, my wife, our daughter & son-in-law & their twin infant baby boys) first time up there this year, along with my Dad's. It's always been the family gathering place from early May through Columbus Day every year; weekends, holidays, vacations, everything. Everyone feels like this was another 1816, "The Year Without A Summer." I get the feeling that my father will take this as a turning point, either to be reinvigorated and recover, or to feel that now he's done all that he's wanted to and it's time to just go on his next, eternal, journey... After seeing him yesterday, I think it will be the latter.
We'll have all his favorite foods - well, at least those that still taste good after being pureed. He can't eat solid foods, or unthickened liquids. He can take Bailey's Irish Cream, wine, and beer on a "stick sponge" or whatever they're called, and it is such a joy to him to be able to eat or drink whatever he wants. So, we'll be celebrating once again, but this time it'll be a celebration of his life.
Sorry for going on again, thanks for letting me. Should've put it in another separate thread. Again, thanks guys.
- Tim

Well, that post above is a tough act to follow and there are no words to offer other than cherish life and enjoy the moments. On a personal note, I am a last-minute scratch from attending the rondy. Between transportation issues and backlog of work commitments with several friends who are counting on me here this weekend, I cannot get away to play with trappers. While I'd much rather be far east of here in the trapping world for a whole day, I'll be wielding a chainsaw and splitting maul from now until dusk. Then office work for a few more hours past that. Y'all have a great time up there, enjoy the waning summer sun and I'll look forward to the fabled Zerby gathering in 2015
