At least they moved most of the coon. Cleaned out the pipeline and can now start fresh this season. Rats were down as well.

Strength of the market is shown by clearances of goods into the hands of manufacturers, not by price or overall clearances. How many of the coon skins (or any other specie skins) that were sold were bought up by investors with deep pockets, hoping the market advances by 5-10% by January? That happens often and those investors just leave the skins at the warehouse and re-consign them to the next sale. It's better than money in the bank if it works.

Be glad you don't raise ranch fur, pelt's valued at 175 in Feb averaged 70 this sale. There is no avenue for wild or ranched fur to be sold that is free from market munipulation. Buyers are aware that all they have to do is sit on there hands for a few months and the auction houses will panick and sell cheap.

Who traps for the money anyway? It's in the blood baby, not the pocket. If they weren't worth a dime i'de wear em myself. Remember the old days when fur was clothes?

I don't know anyone that has ever trapped that hasn't hoped to sell their fur for good money. Certainly, the money is a part of trapping. It helps to pay the costs of the hobby, but it isn't everything. I like a big fur check so that I can spend more on all the goodies!

I wonder how these rat prices will affect the Montezuma bids due in next week. Last year's $2,700+ unit wasn't even dented on the rats there, I saw 50sih all at the same time on top of ice mere days past 2/15 close this year. Over the summer that unit was drained and now bone dry to let vegetation regrow from the complete eat-out last winter. Someone did not make money on that unit, if it was even trapped at all.
Be interesting to see what the bids are this time with rat prices off 1/3 to 1/2 of last year's highs. According to the official harvest reports, they don't catch very many rats off any unit there as is it :>O

Who ever bid $2700 for that unit probably never paid up and didn't dare to show up and do any trapping there! How large are those areas? 300 rats worth of bid money before you even start putting a nickel in your own pocket. How could anyone think that made sense?

no, they paid and actually reported 457 rats taken now that I look back thru the report. Next most expensive unit was $2,222 and he only caught 261 rats there... looks like a breakeven situation there.
The other unit discussed had easy 1,000+ rats catch potential there. Myself and a number of other guys drooled over that one, and it was amazing to see the breaking ice just crawling with live rats in late Fed just days after season closed. I personally counted 50+ while parked at the end of its access road while looking over the ice with binoculars at dusk. That's 50+ rats visible on just one corner of the flow, on the ice at same time.
Redtail hawks, horned owls and bald eagles were drooling, too :>/

Can a group of trappers get together and bid on a unit or is it limited to just one trapper? How big are the units? Any idea?

two men can partner up, the units vary in acreage size and vary in muskrat populations from one year to the next. I'll tell you from personal experience that it is a years-long learning curve to understand what is what there. for example, the best unit past two years is bone-dry ground this year.

Austin, Leave them muskrats for the women and children. You the fox man! women & children cannot catch 1,000+ to 2,000 rats in a season. Nor can most canine trappers on earth, either. A few come to mind, but not many

Seems like a real crap shoot to me. If you have to pay between 2 and 3 grand for the unit, then have to have/maintain a boat, truck, fur shack, traps, stretchers, etc, etc, ..........
Even if you could catch 1000 rats, with the work involved, and the market as unstable as it is, I couldn't imagine paying such a large amount just to try it. With my luck, I would break a leg the morning before the season opener and never get a trap set! lol

But...... People spend thousands upon thousands, every year to go on a hunt, only to spend even more at the taxidermist, if they are successful.. 2,700.00 is a cheap whitetail hunt and only lasts 5/7 days. That same money can get you 3 months of non stop action, then you get a partial refund or maybe even an overage, if you do well...
Different ways of looking at it.
