Has any one used the box on the side of a tree for trapping coons. Like the one they show in the hunting and trapping guide?

I set several every season and have pretty good luck with them. I only use them in well hidden places that I know no other people are likely to wander through. The big boxes draw a lot of Johny Sneakums! I build mine with a hinged top and small shelf just inside for the bait. I bait with fish based baits.
They tend to catch a lot of grinners where they are plentiful, but once you clear them out the coon tend to find and fill them. I would recommend using the DP's instead, unless you already have a bunch of the body grips. The boxes are heavy and bulky to carry in and out of set locations. Even using the buckets, that you can stack, are a pain to haul. I trap mostly off my 4 wheeler, and stack the boxes all disassembled on the front rack. I throw a cordless drill in my trap box on the back, and assemble them with screws where I need them.

I use about 80 of them only on the ground flat not on the tree make up and get them out early so leaves and dead grass help blend them in I leave them year to year where I can with permission save a lot of time

I would hesitate putting any nails in anyone trees. Don't do it on state land at all.
