What's the coon population up in the Redfield area? There seems to be a lot of state land around there if anyone knows thanks!

There are virtually no raccoons in that area. Diseases took their toll many years ago and the raccoon population never bounced back. Even before that there were far fewer coon in such areas as coon thrive much better in agricultural settings. St. Lawrence County has one of the highest raccoon populations of anywhere I've ever been, however they are much poorer colored than Southeastern and Western New York raccoons.

It's amazing the color and fur quality differences I encounter in less than 9 miles. The raccoons from our farm are silky, lots of black, just beautiful pelts. Here at the home orchard, less than 9 miles distant, the raccoons are predominantly silver, the fur is short and thin, and the guard hairs are wiry and frizzy. Not at all appealing. And the prices paid reflect that difference!

Yup, exactly. That's why I watch, with some amusement, trappers on the internet comparing fur prices with total disregard to quality, color, section, damage, etc, etc, etc
