Many of you many not know what this is all about. Mute swans are an invasive specie that can cause damage to native aquatic vegetation, they are very aggressive (especially when nesting and raising young) and have even been known to be the cause of death of swimmers and kayakers (by drowning), and they are detrimental to some native wildlife and waterfowl species. Tundra and trumpeter swans are native species and do not damage the aquatic environments. Unfortunately, many do not understand the differences and feel the need to protect all swans. Those folks have taken their concerns to the Legislature to attempt to overturn the DEC's position to eliminate invasive, detrimental mute swans from the upstate NY landscape. Anytime wildlife issues become governed by the politics instead of regulated by the professional wildlife biologists at the NYSDEC, a dangerous precedent is set. I would urge you to sign this petition in the hope that it will help stop the Governor from signing a bill that is intended to prevent the DEC from properly managing the mute swan population in NY. If you need further information before signing, please feel free to call or send mea pm or email. Thank you!

Not for nothing, but the petition site should have an explanation in their appeal to possible signers. Just saying.

It is unfortunate that we are sometimes expected to have already read the proposed bills in the Assembly and Senate, proposals in the State Register, etc. Most don't have much time to devote to that in today's world and that is totally understood, albeit unfortunate. I agree that a better explanation should have been provided, and wasn't, so I did the best I could as I am somewhat familiar with what has been going on with mute swan management in NY.

I signed, but I'm more than slightly uncomfortable with the other ideologies espoused by the organizers. Strange bedfellows, indeed. Nevertheless I'm all for setting differences aside and finding common ground for the common good.

I don't really know what information you are after. I will give you the background information: The DEC had a 8-12 week comment period about the draft mute swan management plan, right before these bills were introduced. During that comment period a copy of the draft plan was available to the public. As with all DEC wildlife plans, the issues about the species and the strategies the DEC intends to use were outlined in the plan. I believe they took the draft plan down, the DEC was suppose to come up with a revised plan because of overwhelming opposition during public comment. The DEC never revised the plan or at least never reopened public comment on any revision they did in fact make. A few days before the public comment was to end two bills were introduced to block the DEC's plan. In about a month or two, the bills passed in both houses, with only twenty five assembly members voting pro-DEC and zero state senators voting pro-DEC. The law has not yet been sent to the governor and we are petitioning the governor to VETO the proposed law. As far as other information regarding the problems with mute swans, here is a link to our website and our YouTube videos about mute swans: nydovehunting.weebly.com/mute-swans.htmlwww.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLo3wo7NfGAfn9kiGfUHXAb5h7BdYcM7qeIf there is anything else I can answer after you review the above information, feel free to ask.
