I'm looking for recommendations for a good trapping canoe. Ideally would fit in back of F-150, lightweight, stable, etc. Any suggestions? Arrowsmith

I own a 12' Radisson canoe that I can easily lift and shove into the back of my pickup. This canoe is relatively stable and canbe paddled from the reae or rowed from the center. They come with a side board that you could use an electric motor. I love it for pond brook trout fishing and getting back in marshes for water trapping.

old town sportsman, the 12 or 14 foot, I have had mine for 5 years now and have had 300 plus pound loads in it and gone over beaver dams, have yet to break it, the old mad river kevlars are ok, but not as durable, and the radisoons are good to, I guess the old town is good for the price and is a real canoein shape and style, although I ran a line with a partner in his raddison and I really likes its light weight, the old town is heaveier

Thanks for the input. I have an old coleman 17' (to long),and an old town sportmans square stern the family got me a year ago for fathers day, but it is to long for the back of the truck, and at 100 plus pounds really to heavy to comfortably put on top of an f-150 alone. I can do it but it is WORK! Arrowsmith

Update. My friend informed me has an old town guide 119 (12' long) one person canoe I can try. He says it seems fairly stable, but he has had to lower the seat a bit and it's not to comfy on the back after an hour or so he says. On another front, my son just purchased a 10' green "Fishing Kayak from Dicks today, and he tells me that I should really give the Kayak a try. I've never been in a Kayak and all the movies I've seen show people rolling them in fast water, but he tells me that these new Kayaks are just as stable as a canoe. I have seen some of the "boss of the swamp" videos on youtube, and I notice he uses a kayak for beaver trapping. Any input on that? Arrowsmith

I have used kayaks, probably 6 different ones, uset to help sell them to, and they are way more comfortable and easier to navigate in with one many and probably more stable, but yo cant fit many traps in one, if you got into a big creek, marsh or beaver flowage, you wouldn't be able to carry the catch or trapps, I have the small old town sportsman and allways wondered about the sqauere stern, but you should be fine with the guide as well, I have a mad river guide boat, that was based off an Adirondack canoe form back in the day and love it, but wont trap out of it when it gets real cold, because its tipy

Thanks for the replies. I got my trapping canoe. Went to my friends last night to fish and he liked my old coleman 17' so much that he traded me for his old town guide 119. I fished out of it for about an hour and think it should work perfectly for trapping marshes and beaver ponds. I am able to lift it easily into the short bed of my F-150, and when angled in the truck bed it only extends out over the tailgate about 3-1/2'. I need to buy a double ended kayak paddle, which is what most use for this small canoe, and I will be buying some sort of comfortable life jacket that I can work in just in case I do tip it over. I plan to separate traps into buckets with caribeners hooked to bucket handle to avoid loss if I go over. We'll see how this goes. Arrowsmith
