A Muskrat finally poked it's nose out from under Lakeview WMA's Polar Ice-Cap. He ran straight into walleyed's #160 Duke Bottom Edge Set. At least I won't be skunked this Spring. w

not sure about in watertown, but south all the way thru lowville it is still locked up solid, as with just about every other body of water in the area, was out trudging (up to my waist at times)thru the snow and woods last week trying to find some water to set, few and far between but warm up starting thurs will hopefully change that

Two inches of fresh Snow Last Night and Pretty Cold here in woodville.
I'm sure my floats are frozen in.
Have not yet checked traps.
Bring an Ice Auger to clear a path if you expect to float the upper Black River from Carthage on Upstream.
Looks Like it's Still February over there.

I would wait for the snow melt to hit the river! We typically run that section of the Black in our white water kayaks... 8 miles of class III and IV with lots of drops and standing waves (probably hit some class V and VI if you time it right). There is a bit of “flat water” in the first stretch, and virtually none in The Gorge. I'll help you look for your canoe and paddles later this spring when I'm out fishing in the lake.

dino, I think we can make it thru. Gonna have the canoe loaded down with steel & gear real good so she rides low. Figure we might take on a little water when the waves splash, but shouldn't be too bad. I'm going to have some friends videotape the run so I can watch later on.

A billion years ago I launched my then-new fiberglass TDB-17 at the RT 3 boat launch to head to Dexter for the Fulton Bullhead Tourney.....
April...snow melt....high water.
Before I got to the venerable Dexter Marsh, I see "rapids" in front of me....
I panic on the inside...on the outside, by partners think I have this under control.
Not sure if you know where I mean, but I navigated that fancy duck boat though a spot that scared the poop out of me...to this day, my buddies have no idea how terrified I was!
Like the new guy at the launch with a boat for the first time...I acted like I knew what I was doing...but didn't.....
Hey, I lived to talk about it!

After you don't make it Through, Austin.....Can I have your Traps and Stuff. W if by chance something should happen to me (doubtful) you will find all my traps neatly stacked in plastic buckets in the bottom of canoe. They make take on a few specks of water, paddle drippings I suppose. Just look for them all stacked right there.

I've seen some big bullheads out of Black Lake and the St Lawrence tribs

we have more brown bullheads than black ones in the lake right here... the shallower lakes west of me have more blacks than browns. Bullheads aren't high on my list of eating fish, but I love to catch them. If it were still legal to sell them to restaurants, I'd make it a part-time job every spring

Two Muskrat were spotted yesterday sitting on the Ice below a culvert nibbling on green watercress at a nearby Farm. Walleyed secured permission from the Dairy farmer to hop the fence and deploy two floats lured with Papabear's Rat Piler and Rat Jam. The Ice shelf that the muskrat had perched on was broken away from the shore and sent downstream leaving walleyed's floats as the only handy option for the rats to get out of the water This morning upon checking there was one less muskrat in that creek. w

below culvert = natural toilet going to form there somewhere. hotspot! The whole pool was 75% iced over yesterday and today wide open. Did not see evidence of a Toilet yet, but there will be a trap slipped into position if one develops. I heaved a half dozen more floats out below some more culvert/Bridges today in the cold rain, till my back gave out. watched two different mink bouncing along a small marsh feeder creek as I was putting in two bottom edge sets. I stood perfectly still as they approached with 10 feet and then paced back and forth trying to wind me. Then each one headed back up stream and took another branch of the feeder creek taking a wide berth around me. Maybe I'll have one of them in the AM. They both looked to be Huge Males. w

Picked up a couple more Muskrat one on a float I set yesterday, and another on a bottom edge set. These Rats have not seen any evidence of biting but they are very lean without any body fat on them, and are showing very slight kidney circles on the dried pelts. w
