I have had at least one dog all my life and for the last 25 years I've had 2 or more. lol I've had several diffrent breeds, and none have been totally disapointing. Having said that though, be sure that if you decide to get ANY hunting breed, you make yourself well aware of what is entailed!!! They are all high energy. Big ranging bird dogs, droopy eared hounds, bugeling beagels, and all the rest need too be able to run. They need a release for their energy. Long walks on a leash don't work, they need to be able to spend a good part of their day using their minds and bodies. If you don't provide a healthy release for their energy every day, they will certainly find one that isn't so healthy. Now, having said that, what are you waiting for! I tend to love my English Pointers. They are rugged, healty, intellegent, increadably loyal, good in the house, easy to train, incredably driven........... well, they are just great! I don't know about the allergy thing though. My neighbor has curs, and they seem to be good as well, smart and loyal. If I were you, I would also seriously consider a, now don't laugh, Poodle. Yes, I said it. A Poodle. They are among the smartest of all breeds and are hypo alergenic. I now have three dogs and one is a toy poodle/silky Terrior that my wife had to have. I, being one to believe that no dog is happy until it is hunting something, trained her to chase rabbits. There is no stopping her now. She won't leave my side without protest. She cahses bunnies and squirles, points birds and chases those little water skippers all summer. She fits in a small basket, and can go just about anywhere. The only real issue with her, that we don't have with her big brothers (a pointer and a blue tick)is the need for monthly hair cut. $40.00 every 4 to 6 weeks. And, just in case you had the crazy idea that a hound would be the right fit, think again! lol I've had several in my lifetime, and all have been really great at doing what they were trained for, when they wanted to. Pretty much, they do what ever they want to when ever they want. Great dogs, just not what I would recomend for a first dog!

Sounds like a tall order Dino! Hypoallergenic you would need to stick with terrier or poodle coated breeds. terriers can be great dogs in my experiences. they are smart but can be stubborn. some have the high energy some do not, most terriers or any dog with hair vs fur does require grooming costs whether its haircuts or brushing.
I am a hound girl and they are great dogs for the right people, awesome with kids are very smart but can be hard to train. some out of my past litter have been made into rabbit dogs and even bird dogs( these are experienced people that were very dedicated to training)
pointer breeds you run into high strung dogs, they are also good with kids but many(not all) have that energy that just doesn't turn off. They will hunt birds and I know some that will even tree squirrels so the hunting drive is there. I used to hunt with pointers quite a bit they are just not my type of dog, to wired for my taste(and yes I have excitable hounds! it is just a different type of energy).
I currently added a lab about 9 months ago to my family(future duck dog). she is driven but isn't off the wall crazy, very very easy to train and loves everyone. she does shed as they are a double coated breed. She is a dog that loves to please me so I am sure she would do anything I trained her too.
so you have a tall order for a dog, but in reality any breed can be good it is all about how much training you put in. Maybe you should look into a mix? herding dog mixes can be very versatile and trainable, but then again you have the shedding factor. If you find a purebred that fits your needs make sure you buy from a reputable person because the breed isn't all that makes the dog, meet the parents, every bloodline within the breed has good and bad traits.

I have West Siberian Laika. No better hunting dog exists IMO of course. You can go with laika for everything between chipmunk and bear. How many times i had my pheasants limit while guys with pointers could not get one. Look here for more info www.laikaforum.org/forum/

I wanted to follow up with everyone on this post...and thanks again for sending me your thoughts on my dog choosing question...all the advice was very helpful and instrumental with me and my family making our final decision. With that said, I would like to introduce you to Samson, our German Shorthair pointer. Samson was born March 22, 2015. We lucked out with an incredible dog and incredible blood lines from both Mom and Dad...we ended up with the pick of the litter (with help from a very seasoned member/officer of the GSP of Western New York Club). Colton is excited to work him in the various field trials and Carly plans to show him. Samson doesn't leave the kids side or maybe the kids don't leave Samson...either way, they are inseparable. Take care, Dino
