I am still working out the Details in my head on how best to accomplish it in a fair and legitimate way.
I am planning on offering a Fishing Charter for Trophy Walleye on Lake Ontario as A grand prize for the Biggest (heaviest) Beaver. Maybe some other prizes for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th.
I was thinking about having a $5.00 to $10.00 Entry Fee like has been done with the Annual Trapping Photo Contest to Benefit the Trapper's Relief Fund.
Not sure about how to set up the rules.
Since all weighing devices, would be different for every entrant, It would almost have to be an "On Your Honor" type weigh in due to logistical challenges
Obviously a digital photo of the trapper with their beaver would be required to be submitted to this website.
Maybe include a digital photo of local Newspaper (with the date of catch visible in the photo.
A weigh slip from where you weighed it if applicable. (I used one from the Local Gravel Quarry scales).
Perhaps limit participation to whose who are current, up-to-date members of NYSTA.
I am just throwing out ideas to banter about between Forum members.
Please chime in if you have any ideas.
Perhaps a Roll call of Forum members in a poll to gauge potential Participation levels would help us determine if this is even something that the Forum's Trapper's would like to become involved in.
Please let us know if you have any ideas.

yea Bob...somewhere between 70 and 75 on the refuge deer scale...it bottomed out the digital scale of the DEC...it was taken of the state lands at Howands Isand...on a nuisance permit...I had it higher for the first bunch of photos...at the DEC building...it just kept getting lower until that photo...there is one I saw last year while mushrat trapping that is much bigger than that one...I will be going to get her this winter...if she is still alive...it will be donated to the DEC for a display at the MAC center...I had a hat on up until that picture...I carried that on my shoulders for a little over a mile and was disappointed that the scales didn't read the carry weight of 100 plus

Member of New Hampshire Trappers Association. Hey Mr. Walleyed, I can see why you might want to include only NYSTA members......I would be afraid to if I were looking at the crew you have here from New Hampshire...... :

Something I have been looking at for a while is the correlation between the width of the tail and weigh. Its is possible to put down a certain tail width that would put the beaver in a certain weight area. You could maybe do something like that and any beaver meeting the minimum tail width could go in for a drawing. A picture could be taken with tape measure on the tail. Weight could be added information but not the qualifier.

I'm interested in the contest. Just signed up for NYSTA last week.
IMO the correlation of tail width to weight varys depending on there environment. A river beaver will not weight as much do to the energy it exerts compared to a marsh beaver. A spring beaver will weigh less.

Weight could be added information but not the qualifier. Most of the Heavier beaver I have captured have had very wide tails. I think I included the tail width and length of the 60 lber from last year's "Contest" in my entry submission. That sounds like a possibly good type of possible criteria for determining beaver Size/weight as it would eliminate the problem of everyone using a different type scale and make picture taking documentation easier. Potentially a Good idea Rufus. anyone else have ideas. w

If we used criteria such as NYSTA membership, it would be valuable as a mini-membership drive. I just threw that out as an idea, as the contest would then benefit both the Trapper's Relief Fund AND NYSTA. Just an idea at this point. I'd point out also that anyone from another state can join NYSTA. w

No entry fee. No prizes.
Just "Bragging Rights" and a hearty handshake next time we meet.
KIS
The correlation between tail measurements and weight/pelt size would be interesting.

Bob is fine. Also I have absolutely no problem with Out of state trappers here. They are already here what with the deer hunting, trout and salmon fishing, and spring Turkey hunting not mention a fair number of trappers right in my area. Crack all the nuts you want, dale. No Problem. But please don't pick on Baldy (Austin) as he is a little sensitive right now !! Keep the ideas coming. w
